A Safe Haven- an elementary classroom

Sometimes in difficult situations
My heart melts like wax, crestfallen
My students deserve an education
For strength, I put up my wall then

This wall grows taller with each offence
For I cannot let misbehavior get to me
I know a child's reacting to outside influence
Where strife overwrites and is their schooling

So I show a tried and true wall of confidence
I know how and where I must lead them
I know good grades can make a difference
I show them that school is a safe haven

Fear has no place in a school
Each routine adds stability
Each assignment is a tool
To increase an ability

When I go home the wall can fall
I collapse so I can rebuild
I'm reminded that this is my call
I've a purpose to fulfill

I know these very students that try me
Will return to my room each year
Not for accusing, but for hugging
Grateful for the love they felt here

A safe haven, a place to begin A steady hand when the world rushes in

A Young Man in a Large City

A young man in a large city
In a home of affluence
Was selfish and knew not pity
As he abused his influence

In the best school money could buy
A life of bounty stood before him
Though he had the smarts, he would not try
For he'd naught work ethics to begin

The man's father sought the advice
Of an old man reading a book
"Well, make him pay and he'll think twice"
(For he knew the young man did naught but took)

And when the young man could buy no more
How he shouted and had a big fit!
Then he got a job and improved his scores
And told Grandpa he was thankful for it

when AI takes over and you love it!.......Still, Grandpa and his wisdom saves the day!

Verse 1] A young man lived in a crowded town Where polished towers filled the view In a house where the wealth came pouring down He took what he wanted, as rich boys do He wore his father's name like a coat And leaned on every door he knew If someone needed help, he'd miss the note But called it clever when he pushed on through [Chorus] You can open every door in the world And still refuse to walk inside A gift is only worth the work it takes And pride can make a fool of a guide [Verse 2] The finest school that money could find Placed every chance upon his desk He had a quick and capable mind But chose the easiest road at best His books stayed shut, his hours slipped by While silver spoons kept making noise He thought tomorrow would never ask him why And mistook his comfort for a choice [Verse 3] His father went to an older friend Who sat with a book beside the fire “Let consequence become his teacher, then; Remove the rope that feeds desire Make him pay for every needless thing Let empty pockets clear his sight A lesson carried by a broken spring May hold when lectures never might” [Chorus] You can open every door in the world And still refuse to walk inside A gift is only worth the work it takes And pride can make a fool of a guide [Bridge] When the young man reached for one more treat The cupboard answered, “Not today” He stamped and shouted through the street As every borrowed comfort rolled away No driver came, no tailor called No easy answer, no family shield The world looked different when he stood small With his own two hands to make a meal [Verse 4] He found a job and rose before dawn Learned the weight of showing up He earned each mark he once had pawned And slowly filled his empty cup The work was hard, but the days grew clear He saw what effort could repair Then he thanked his grandpa, year by year: “You taught me how to meet my share” [Final Chorus] You can open every door in the world But you must choose to walk inside A gift becomes a life when effort joins it And humility can be your guide [Outro] So if fortune sets a table wide Take your portion, then do your part The hand that learns to give with pride Has finally grown a grateful heart

English As a Second Language

If I don't speak the language you know
It's ok. Just go with the flow
I'll assign a friend who will help
You don't have to try by yourself

What If You've Hit a Learning Plateau?

Through eyes to see and ears to hear,

curiosity is won.

The Holy Ghost brings wisdom near,

once wonderous searching has begun.

Teaching the Savior's Way

Luke 4:15–30, Jesus speaks to those who do not believe He is the Messiah
https://www.lds.org/media-library/images/category/teachings-bible-images?lang=eng

Yeah for the church's new manual.  https://www.lds.org/manual/teaching-in-the-saviors-way?lang=eng

We attend a Christian school
Where we learn the Savior's way
Through the spirit's voice, His light is shown
We can practice what we learn
As we apply it and discern
We gain the confidence to stand alone

Hark! Hark! Hear the Spirit whisper
As we cry out much with love
For we open up our minds
To our place in God's designs
Our Divine nature comes from above

We can be the Savior's hands
And fulfill, through love, His plans
Though the stretched of service is long
We are Gods in embryo
In our talents, watch us grow
As through opposition, we're made strong

Hark! Hark! Hear the Spirit whisper
As we cry out much with love
For we open up our minds
To our place in God's designs
Divine nature comes to us from above

We have reservoirs from which to tell
How the spirit fills us up to swell
As we learn to see with different eyes
We have goals we want to reach
In simplicity, to teach
And apply the gospel in our lives

Hark! Hark! Hear the Spirit whisper
As we cry out much with love
For we open up our minds
To our place in God's designs
Divine nature comes to us from up above

We can fan the fire of faith
In these trying times we face
We can rally and unite in courage bold
We can pray and sing a hymn
And invite the spirit in
To refine us as sweet miracles unfold

Hark! Hark! Hear the Spirit whisper
As we cry out much with love
For we open up our minds
To our place in God's designs

Divine nature comes to us from up above

Be Whole

Be whole in the Lord
And apply the gospel
In all your walks of life
Yes, it is possible!

Shed a little light
On each subject at hand
Seek for Jesus Christ
To help you understand

I'm so excited to be teaching at David O McKay Academy in Henderson where we can do this and feel the spirit teach both the teacher and the students.

Service with a Smile

Serve with a smile
Don't wait to be told
Go the extra mile
With a heart of gold

This poem was inspired while I was watching the CubScout training.  They have such beautiful pictures and I loved this thought!

Stick to It

Stick to it
And don't give up!
Bit by bit,
You'll pass what's tough!

Stick to It

Stick to it
And don't give up
Bit by bit
You'll pass what's tough

Create a Space

Create a sense of place
where the world goes away.
Where in your heart there's space
for the spirit to stay.
I am getting so excited about David O. MacKay Academy, named after a prophet and great teacher. What an opportunity for students to feel the spirit in a school environment in LasVegas and Henderson Nevada. Doors are opening for this great event and the excitement, closeness, and joy is amazing!

True Intent

If you really want to know
Just ask God and listen
An experience will show
And make a warm impression

Oft, it comes in a thought
From something you read or hear
You will know you've been taught
For you'll feel the spirit near

The Best Time to Plant a Tree

A large tree is silhouetted by the sunset, which is pink, purple, and blue.

The best time to plant a tree
Was ages ago.
Plant one now. One day you'll see
Fruit filled blessings grow
"An old proverb says, “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.” Now is the best time to start becoming the person we eventually want to be—not only 20 years from now but also for all eternity."

I attended American Heritage School of South Jordan Foundations Training. They are ages ahead of our school and we are blessed to have them to see how fruitful we can become. American Heritage Academy of Las Vegas is now of Henderson and we are under construction to become amazing. Both are based on upon a 4o year inspired methodology developed by the Foundation for American Christian Education (FACE), which implements The Principle Approach®. The Utah school is 27 years old and we are 13 years.

The Spiritual ABC's

The Spiritual ABC's

Are timeless for education
They scatter well happy seeds
For peaceable habitation

     from the New England Primer:

A - A wise son [daughter] makes a glad father, but a foolish son [daughter] is the heaviness of his mother.
B - Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure and trouble therewith.
C - Come unto Christ all ye that labor are heavy laden, and He will give you rest.
D - Do not the abominable thing which I hate, saith the Lord.
- Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
F - Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction will drive it far from him.
G - Grieve not the Holy Spirit.
H - Holiness becomes God's house forever.
I - It is good for me to draw near unto God.
- Just as you are, with all your sin, come on to Jesus now.
K - Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life.
L - Liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone.
M - Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers them out of them all.
N - Now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation.
O - Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
- Pray to thy Father which is in secret, and thy Father which sees in secret, shall reward thee openly.
Q - Quit you like men, be strong, stand fast in the faith.
R - Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth.
S - Salvation belongeth to the Lord.
T - Trust in God at all times ye people, pour out your hearts before Him.
U - Upon the wicked God shall rain an horrible tempest.
W - Woe to the wicked, it shall be ill with him, for the reward of his hands shall be given him.
X - Exhort one another daily while it is called to-day, lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
Y - Young men ye have overcome the wicked one.
- Zeal hath consumed me, because thy enemies have forgotten the words of God.

Captivate and Cultivate

I pray my teaching will captivate
And inspire the mind to cultivate
Thoughts that touch the heart for good
And spread feelings of gratitude

Bored

Boring people are bored
For in them is not stored
Good thoughts to dwell upon
When the hours grow long

I guess all you can do when someone is bored is turn it back on them and challenge their attitude or thought processing.   Just thinking about teaching. It can't all be entertaining and the work sometimes is repetitious.  Sigh.

He's Been There Before

He's Been There Before by Elder Troy Whittle
The alarm bell rings at 6:30, I stumble to my feet
I grab my companions bedding and pull off his sheets
A groan fills the room, is it already time to arise?
It seems like just a second ago I was able to shut my eyes

The morning activities follow- study, prayer and such
When it's time to leave the apartment, you feel you haven't accomplished much
"We have a super day planned," My comp. says with a grin
I lowly utter a faithless breath, "Yeah, if anyone lets us in."

With the word of God and my faithful Schwinn, we ride off in the street prepared to
Face another day of humidity and heat
It's 9:30 in the evening, the day is almost through
My champion and I are riding home not accomplishing what we thought to do

We ride up to the mailbox, hoping to receive a lot
Only to look inside and hear my echo reverberate "air Box"
We go up to our apartment, the day is now complete
The only thing to show for our work is a case of blistery feet

It's past 10:30 p.m. My companion is fast asleep,
Silence engulfs me all about and I begin to weep
In the midst of sadness, I kneel down to pray
I need to talk to father, but I'm not sure what to say

"Oh, Father" I begin, "What happened to us today?
I thought we'd teach somebody, but everyone was away
My hands, my aching hands- worn, hurt and beat;
If our area was any smaller, we'd have knocked every street"

"Why on missions are the days so much alike?
The only difference about today was the flat tire on my bike
Will you send some cooler weather? The heat is killing me
I sweat so bad, it gets in my eyes, it's very hard to see"

"Why do I have to wear a helmet, isn't your protection enough?
People always laugh at me, and call me stupid stuff
Please send us investigators so I may give them what they lack
I want to give them Books of Mormon, the weight of them hurts my back"

"And what about my family: They don't have much to say
I'm sick of not hearing from home day after day after day
Oh Father, Why am I here am I just wasting time?
Sometimes I just want to go home, I'm sorry but that's on my mind"

"My companion, Heavenly Father, what are you giving me?
"The way he rides his bicycle, I don't think he can see
Now you have it, I can't go on, I don't know what to do
That, my Father in Heaven, is the prayer I have for you"

My prayer now finished, I stand up, then jump right into bed
I need my rest for tomorrow, we have another long day ahead
Sleep start to overtake me, I seem to drift away
Then it seems a vision takes me to another time in another day

I'm standing alone on the hill. The view is very nice
A man walks to wards me and says, "My name is Jesus Christ"
Tears of joy well up inside, I fall down to His feet
"Arise," He states, "Follow me to the shade. You and I need to speak"

My attention's towards my Savior, total and complete
He says, "Your mission is similar of what happened to me
I understand how you feel, I know what you're going through
In fact, it would be fair to say I've felt the same as you"

"I even know how you felt when no one listened to you
At times I felt not quite sure what else I could do
I know you don't like to ride a bicycle, for you a car would be sweet
Just remember the donkey I rode wasn't equipped with 21 speeds"

"I understand you don't like sweating, in fact it's something you hate
I remember when I sweat blood from ev’ry pore, oh the agony was great!
I see you don't like your companion- you'd rather have someone else-
I once had a companion named Judas who sold my life for wealth"

"It's hard to wear a helmet and have people make fun of you
I remember when they put thorns on my head and called me King of the Jews
So you feel burdened down by the weight of your pack
I recall how heavy the cross was when they slammed it on my back"

"Your hands hurt from tracting and knocking on doors all day
I guess when they pounded nails into mine, I ached in a similar way
It's hard not to hear from home when your family's not there to see
I lost communication on the cross and cried, "Father, why hast Thou forsaken me?"

"We have a lot in common, but there's a difference between us you see
I endured to the end and finished my mission, so follow and do like me"
He embraced me with His arms and His light filled me with His love
With tears in my eyes I watched as He went back to the Father above

I stood with awe and wonder when a beep rang in my head
I listened and heard the alarm, then realized I was in my bed
My companion let out a groan, "6:30 already, no way!"
I sat up and said, "Come on, I'll even carry your scriptures today!"

No matter what we go through, when we feel we can't take more
Just stop and think about Jesus Christ, He's been there before

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

These poems are my own thoughts and impressions as I study the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints

I encourage you to read from the Book of Mormon and the standard works, and listen to modern day prophets, also, that your mind and heart might be touched.
