God’s Tender Mercies

God’s tender mercies can be found
When our emotions are tightly wound.
A special sign to show He knows and He cares
That He is with us and our troubles He bares.
A favorite Hymn, words in a talk.
Witness to us in whose footsteps we walk.
We feel as though with God our spirit mingles
We are left in awe with loving tingles
.

Our thoughts provide a place to grow.
Where new enlightenment can flow.
Thus, we store thoughts for good decisions,
And show gratitude for those guided actions.
We ponder the meaning of life in our prayers.
And gain new perspective from one who cares.
We feel as though with God our spirit mingles
We feel highly held by wings of eagles
.

The future holds great mysteries.
We have potential and destinies.
A noble lasting new-found birth.
We will have added glory beyond our worth.
In celestial mansions, we will live.
Dwelling close to Him... who’s Son He did give.
Then we’ll know that with God our spirit mingles
We’ll see we are surrounded by His angels
.

Angels Know "It's Time"

 Angels among us know

When it's our time to go

Like dusk once the sun dips

They linger as life slips

When We Repent We Are Blessed

As far as East is to West,
when we repent we are blessed
There are angels on all sides.
If we seek them, they'll not rest!

Angels Dwell with Us

Oh the secrets angels keep
While they comfort those who weep
They have much they cannot tell
Still, with us we know they dwell

My dad is having surgery. The last time he did we were waiting outside on a balcony. We watched an ambulance racing in. We found out later, it was my aunt. She had died.  Sigh. I was thinking it happened that way for a reason. I don't know that mystery, but I do know they dwell with us.

Laying to Recover

Laying to recover
In a hospital bed
My child came to wonder
And this is what she said

Aunt Cheryl, she is here
And so is Grandpa Brown
And standing up quite near
Is Jimmy tall now to look down

For nearly an hour
She spoke of the deceased
Then sleep overpowered
As my wonder increased

That angels visit each room
The next morning she explained
Offering God's love in bloom
Comforting their pain

May I as God's child
Witness this also
As one accepting and mild
To see and hear and know

At Certain Sacred Times Angels Come

At certain sacred times
God has sent forth His angels
To instruct and minister
His chosen, pure, and faithful

Adam was taught the atonement
Mary... of whom she would carry
The shepherds were given the announcement
These visits were extraordinary

One came unto the Savior
That night in Gethsemane
To offer heaven's comfort
The most significant visit of any...

Angels have come to our day
To restore God's good news again
Unto a book, one showed the way
As prophets of old, too, did descend

At history's crowning events
Is it any wonder...
Angels were found present
To proclaim that for which we hunger

Imagine the sleeping Elijah
Despairing to live no longer
Receiving comfort in trial
Unto becoming faithfully stronger

Imagine 12 Apostles
Standing together in a circle
Fatigued in a foreign land
Too exhausted for the next hurtle...

Imagine the prophet, Brigham Young
Traveling through a desert place
Speaking in an unknown tongue
To those hostile before his face

Imagine being surrounded
By an ominous and angry army
And having your eyes faith opened
Unto horses and chariots of fire sent for disarming

Imagine angels blessing
Those quite ordinary
The weak and distressing
Assisting them to daily tarry

Oft though... manifestations
Come quietly and unseen
Heaven and earths...sublime interactions
Spiritual sustenance to those in need

When do the angels come?
Invisibly in our midst
To the faithful in God's kingdom
They are there... when weighed down to the utmost

In our early days of growing
We may have had days like unto Kirtland
With inspiration richly flowing
And the ways of the world all but distant

Then... comes the days of struggle
Like unto the dark Nauvoo years
Presented with tests to juggle
From disappointments to evil pressing near

Perhaps we wish to recapture
The days of idealistic convictions
When there were moments of rapture
That calmed soaring constrictions

Perhaps now we feel surrounded
By what attacks our good home
Struggling to stay well grounded
To what was nourishingly once known

Know... that midst these tribulations
What was once felt will come again
Like unto the pioneer migrations
When they felt the carts pushing them instead

"Think of the angel who came to comfort the sleeping Elijah when he was in such despair that he wished to live no longer. (See 1 Kgs. 19:4–8.) Or recall when Joseph Smith “saw the Twelve Apostles of the Lamb, … in foreign lands, standing together in a circle, much fatigued, with their clothes tattered and feet swollen, with their eyes cast downward, and Jesus standing in their midst, and they did not behold Him. The Savior looked upon them and wept.” (Joseph Smith, History of the Church, 2:381; italics added.) The Prophet also “saw Elder Brigham Young in a strange land, … in a desert place, upon a rock in the midst of about a dozen [hostile] men. He was preaching to them in their own tongue, and the angel of God standing above his head, with a drawn sword in his hand, protecting him, but he did not see it.” (Ibid.; italics added.)"

"For an unforgettable picture of unseen angelic armies, think of Elisha’s young servant, who cried when he was surrounded by an ominous army, “Alas, my master! how shall we do?” Answered Elisha, “Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.” Then Elisha said, “Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.” (See 2 Kgs. 6:15–17.)"

"President J. Reuben Clark eloquently captured the blessing of unseen angels in the lives of ordinary, devoted people in his masterful sermon, “To Them of the Last Wagon.” President Clark recognized the “mighty men” who led the early Saints, but he reserved his most reverent tribute for “the meekest and lowliest” found in “the last wagon in each of the long wagon trains.” Out in front of these toiling caravans were “the Brethren,” for whom “the air was clear and clean and … they had unbroken vision of the blue vault of heaven.” But, in contrast, “back in the last wagon, … the blue heaven was often shut out from their sight by heavy, dense clouds of the dust of the earth … [which made] the glories of a celestial world [seem] so far away.”

"Even though some of the early brethren had seen “in a vision, the armies of heaven protecting the Saints in their return to Zion” (History of the Church, 2:381), President Clark mentioned angels only once. After describing the grinding frustrations of lame oxen, broken hubs, and sick children in the last wagon, he spoke of a pregnant mother trying to breathe through heavy, choking dust. “Then the morning came when from out that last wagon floated the la-la of the newborn babe, and mother love made a shrine, and Father bowed in reverence before it. But the train must move on. So out into the dust and dirt the last wagon moved again, swaying and jolting, while Mother eased as best she could each pain-giving jolt so no harm might be done her, that she might be strong to feed the little one, bone of her bone, flesh of her flesh. Who will dare to say that angels did not cluster round and guard her and ease her rude bed, for she had given another choice spirit its mortal body that it might work out its God-given destiny?” (New Era, July 1975, p. 8; italics added.)"

Angels in our Midst

The angels in our midst
Are of many shapes and sizes
And as they selflessly lift
It's the love felt that one prizes

Is our opportunity
To know a higher purpose

Oh, That I Were An Angel

Oh, that I were an angel
I'd bless the human race
I'd go to the right and left of man
And would go out before their face

Oh, that I were an angel
Called to extend Father's love
I would work to prepare His people
For their great day to ascend above

Where ever there is sorrow
Or a need for heavenly Light
There is sufficient strength to borrow
And there is wisdom blessedly bright

Come men and pray for angels
To assist you each new day
That when ever life is dangerous
There is naught reason to be afraid

D&C 84: 88
And whoso receiveth you, there I will be also, for I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up.

I Knew, Yet I Would Not Know

I knew, yet I would not know
For I was called, but would not hear
But, then an angel did show
And now it is God that I hold dear

I had not been given to the ways of the Lord
And of His mysteries and marvelous powers
Now... as I say this, it strikes a discord
For I can recall being preserved in dark hours

And as much as I knew this …my heart was yet hard
For I was called many times and would not hear
As one rebelling, God was a thought to discard
For as a man of position, what could I fear?

I am a man of no small reputation
Being well born, I’ve become hard working and rich
And, from Mammon has come my best education
As for gold my hands of industry did itch

To see kindred- I went on a journey
For I had many… as well as friends
Then, behold, this angel appeared unto me
And turned me around… this is where my past ends…

I was sent to my home to feed... a prophet!
Who’d fasted many days and was in need
And as I received him, it was I who did profit
For He blessed me and my house and did feed

His name was Alma and in my house he dwelt
And through him, I testify that the Lord liveth
For he testified to my family and a witness was felt
And now I know I must lean to the Lord who giveth

From Time to Time We are Deeply Touched

From time to time
We are deeply touched
By something kind
And our pain is hushed

Alone one Eve
Many years ago
A man in grief
Faltered in the snow

Until he thought
That he heard something
For strength he fought
As a bell did ring

In the distance
Was a lit hillside
This was his chance
And how his legs tried

But, he staggered
Then fell to the snow
Old and haggard
With no one to know

To a small church
He'd set out to start
There perhaps to search
For solace to his heart

An angel's voice
Whispered to his ear
"Come and rejoice
You are but so near"

"Life's something more
Than feeling all alone
Beyond that door
Is Christ who did atone"

"He's in the song
And in the words spoken
There... you belong
And He'll heal what is broken"

The man more neared
To the sound of voices
Then in he peered...
Smiling as one who rejoices

He stepped inside
To warmth, friendship and love
Thanks to his guide-
An angel from above

That needed hour
Though the night grew chill
Heaven did shower
Blessings down to thrill

A Single Bell

A single bell
On a golden string
Begins to sound
And starts to ring

An unseen shake
By an unseen hand
Commands: awake
And understand

And too marvel
Give awe, give voice
And too revel
Praise God and rejoice

That we are known
By His angels
Who show they've flown
By ringing what dangles

The Ministry of Angels

Shut out from God's presence with finality
Adam and Eve stepped into mortality
They faced thorns and thistles and troubles of every kind
And their dependence on God was ever before their mind

Though they could not see their Father face to face
They saw the manifestation of His grace
And were not left alone when things loomed in sinister
For He sent angels to warn them and to minister

The scriptures are rich in doctrine and history
And some bear witness of holy angels' ministry
And through our dispensation, seen or unseen, we ever sense
That God still answers prayers, and sends His angels for evidence

When in Lehi's dream he found a frightening place
An angel bid him follow out of a dark and dreary waste
And as even the Savior himself was in need of their comfort
We can be assured, in times of trouble, they do lend support

They are subject unto Christ, according to His word
And only through our faith in Him, can they be heard
He will fight our battles and that of our children's
And we need not fear and tremble the signs in the heavens

May we believe and have gratitude for this promise
That angels go before us and are ever in our midst
Always there are angels who come and go all around us
Always we can assist them in the sacred name of Jesus

Leave the Flying to Me

When we pray to the Lord on high
And make Him our habitation
The angels are giv'n charge to fly
And, watch o'er our every location

Where we go and in all our ways
There are angels to supervise
They're sent swiftly, without delays
For we are not always all that wise

The angels whisper thoughts, certainly
When we keep our Lord nearby
So that when we've something tempting
They'll guide us so we'll not reach to try

I can almost hear them breathing
As they gather in prayer and love
They're as God's hands for our keeping
As they watch over us from above

We've enemies that we must fight
Our bodies want to be in charge
We struggle with big appetites
When we're not mindful of what's at large

If we were to see the angels
We'd see them working busily
And from our guardian angels
We might hear, "Leave the flying to me"

May the Lord's angels surround us
One in front and one on each side
To keep us safe as they encrust
May we trust and enjoy the ride

Our Mother

Our mother has charity
She's full of benevolence
As she patterns purity
And cherishes innocence

She serves selflessly, unfeigned
For peace, she negotiates
Angels cannot be restrained
They're as her associates

And when there is but pittance
With faith and with networking
Her arms extend the distance
And puts to place faith working

Our mother's good heart supplies
Tenderness and beauty
And when to her ears one cries
She knows what is her duty

On Mother's Day can she rest?
That depends on who helps her
Perhaps we can do our best
On this day, to be Mother

.....
Come the day, when she is gone
What will we feel everywhere?
Her love went to everyone
As she extended her kind care
....
The day's here, Mother is gone
No longer to telephone
Part of her stays- life goes on
I hear her voice in my own

The Rescue of Alma the Younger

Alma the Younger did more than waste away his youth.
An angel helped him to face this long avoided truth
He had made life hard for members of the church...
But, now rebuked, the guilt felt began to churn

With anguish of soul, none would want to know of
For three bitter days he lay in death's deep coma
Confronting every sin was extremely hard to bear
This was truly an answer to his father's constant prayer

Then as one rescued from the darkest abyss
Alma was awakened to a life of promise
Becoming an example of change, light, and hope-
(One does not have to stay alone, in the dark, to grope)

As to Christ, Alma repented and cried deeply in his heart
He found mercy and deliverance – and a new path to start
Spending the remainder of his many blessed days
Preaching and teaching others how to change their ways

Thank you Phil- author of:
Clean Hands, Pure Heart:
Overcoming Addiction to Pornography
Through the Redeeming Power of Jesus Christ

In this Book, author, Philip A. Harrison relates
his journey out of addiction to pornography into
recovery and freedom. He explains: "like Paul and
Alma the Younger, who also spent a portion of their life
in serious darkness and were delivered from it by
Christ Himself, I am willing to allow my life to be an
example of someone the Lord has rescued from
'the darkest abyss.'"
Using the scriptures and teachings of Church Leaders,
Phil leads us through the process of coming unto Christ
and having our burdens lifted. For those who have
struggled with sexual addiction or any other
overwhelming challenge , as well as for those who
care about them, this book offers welcome help,
guidance and hope.

Who Can Ascend Above the Clouds

Who can ascend above the clouds?
Where a road of white enshrouds
And travel where sky is all you know
There to find rest from what's down below

Do the angels travel high this way?
As they look o'er what we do
May we testify on fast Sunday
So they can look upon us anew

And may they be found beside me
To my left and to my right
To bear me up in my times of need
And keep me safe through the day and night

May I Speak With a New Tongue

May I speak with a new tongue?
As one who's been baptized,
And received the Holy Ghost
Which guides with words of Christ.

May I speak as though an angel?
Softly... with the Holy Ghost.
Which utters what I should do
To perform and receive the most.

May I reach out unto you,
With thoughts which I treasure?
For, from the spirit they then grew
To testify and assure...

Then.. may you listen
To the plainness of the Word
Given of Him now risen
Awaiting to be heard

There to grow and not be faint
Performing in the name of Christ
As through prayer you consecrate
Continually day and night

We Look to the Apostles

We look to the Apostles,
For a witness of Christ.
Then we stand as disciples
And we too testify.
At all times, things and places,
We show our commitment.
And faith shines on our faces
With love and contentment.

Today, what is sufficient?
What can we rejoice in?
Though we've disappointment
and trials of death and sin?
We know what source to look to,
For our eternal rest.
As we testify anew,
Warmth grows within our breast.

Now, as we anticipate
The coming of our Lord.
We can prepare for that date.
With words angels record
All testimonies- they hear!
And, too, rejoice o'er us.
What we hold in us is dear.
There's light in our witness.

But, what of those who've died?
And, not made ordinance?
What to them can be applied?
Who've not received a chance?
We have a holy temple
Where their work we can do.
There, we set an example,
Our light is for them too!

He's Been There Before

He's Been There Before by Elder Troy Whittle
The alarm bell rings at 6:30, I stumble to my feet
I grab my companions bedding and pull off his sheets
A groan fills the room, is it already time to arise?
It seems like just a second ago I was able to shut my eyes

The morning activities follow- study, prayer and such
When it's time to leave the apartment, you feel you haven't accomplished much
"We have a super day planned," My comp. says with a grin
I lowly utter a faithless breath, "Yeah, if anyone lets us in."

With the word of God and my faithful Schwinn, we ride off in the street prepared to
Face another day of humidity and heat
It's 9:30 in the evening, the day is almost through
My champion and I are riding home not accomplishing what we thought to do

We ride up to the mailbox, hoping to receive a lot
Only to look inside and hear my echo reverberate "air Box"
We go up to our apartment, the day is now complete
The only thing to show for our work is a case of blistery feet

It's past 10:30 p.m. My companion is fast asleep,
Silence engulfs me all about and I begin to weep
In the midst of sadness, I kneel down to pray
I need to talk to father, but I'm not sure what to say

"Oh, Father" I begin, "What happened to us today?
I thought we'd teach somebody, but everyone was away
My hands, my aching hands- worn, hurt and beat;
If our area was any smaller, we'd have knocked every street"

"Why on missions are the days so much alike?
The only difference about today was the flat tire on my bike
Will you send some cooler weather? The heat is killing me
I sweat so bad, it gets in my eyes, it's very hard to see"

"Why do I have to wear a helmet, isn't your protection enough?
People always laugh at me, and call me stupid stuff
Please send us investigators so I may give them what they lack
I want to give them Books of Mormon, the weight of them hurts my back"

"And what about my family: They don't have much to say
I'm sick of not hearing from home day after day after day
Oh Father, Why am I here am I just wasting time?
Sometimes I just want to go home, I'm sorry but that's on my mind"

"My companion, Heavenly Father, what are you giving me?
"The way he rides his bicycle, I don't think he can see
Now you have it, I can't go on, I don't know what to do
That, my Father in Heaven, is the prayer I have for you"

My prayer now finished, I stand up, then jump right into bed
I need my rest for tomorrow, we have another long day ahead
Sleep start to overtake me, I seem to drift away
Then it seems a vision takes me to another time in another day

I'm standing alone on the hill. The view is very nice
A man walks to wards me and says, "My name is Jesus Christ"
Tears of joy well up inside, I fall down to His feet
"Arise," He states, "Follow me to the shade. You and I need to speak"

My attention's towards my Savior, total and complete
He says, "Your mission is similar of what happened to me
I understand how you feel, I know what you're going through
In fact, it would be fair to say I've felt the same as you"

"I even know how you felt when no one listened to you
At times I felt not quite sure what else I could do
I know you don't like to ride a bicycle, for you a car would be sweet
Just remember the donkey I rode wasn't equipped with 21 speeds"

"I understand you don't like sweating, in fact it's something you hate
I remember when I sweat blood from ev’ry pore, oh the agony was great!
I see you don't like your companion- you'd rather have someone else-
I once had a companion named Judas who sold my life for wealth"

"It's hard to wear a helmet and have people make fun of you
I remember when they put thorns on my head and called me King of the Jews
So you feel burdened down by the weight of your pack
I recall how heavy the cross was when they slammed it on my back"

"Your hands hurt from tracting and knocking on doors all day
I guess when they pounded nails into mine, I ached in a similar way
It's hard not to hear from home when your family's not there to see
I lost communication on the cross and cried, "Father, why hast Thou forsaken me?"

"We have a lot in common, but there's a difference between us you see
I endured to the end and finished my mission, so follow and do like me"
He embraced me with His arms and His light filled me with His love
With tears in my eyes I watched as He went back to the Father above

I stood with awe and wonder when a beep rang in my head
I listened and heard the alarm, then realized I was in my bed
My companion let out a groan, "6:30 already, no way!"
I sat up and said, "Come on, I'll even carry your scriptures today!"

No matter what we go through, when we feel we can't take more
Just stop and think about Jesus Christ, He's been there before

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

These poems are my own thoughts and impressions as I study the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints

I encourage you to read from the Book of Mormon and the standard works, and listen to modern day prophets, also, that your mind and heart might be touched.
