Four Promises Four Cups- The Passover

The first version is with a Shofar feel.  The second, a ballad version, is at the bottom of page. It is hard to describe the feelings of having struggled through and researching these past posts.  God bless!

. I t

The Last Supper, in the Upper room

Was a Passover celebration

A tradition of thanks that Israel

Was freed to become a Zion nation

The meal is set in order a "seder' in Hebrew

This celebration reads as a book

Along with the food there are things to say and do

The wine, there are four cups, let's take a deeper look

In Exodus six the Lord made them four promises

He brought them out of Egypt, from the Pharoah's yoke

He freed them of slavery-these both He has fulfilled

He will redeem them with an outstretched arm, judging mightily

He will drink this final cup with them in the kingdom of heaven

Moses at the burning bush- this was the Lord

The plagues, the miracles came from Him

The fleeing through the parted sea- His handy work

Too, Mount Sinai, the watered rock and manna from Heaven

Before Jesus and the apostles

Enter the upper room, each touches the wall

The kiss of the Mezuzah

In covenant with the oneness of God

With The first cup, the Cup of Blessing
The Lord washed His hands
as a sanctifying cleansing
A celebration grand
That again in Paradise they could meet

out of spiritual slavery
the bondage of sin
The end of the fear of death
For they could be with Him

With the second cup, the cup of plagues
Three unleavened matzahs, the Godhead
The middle one in half, set aside, to wait
All wash their hands, Jesus washes their feet

One has betrayed Him, Jesus taught
The bitter herbs are eaten
Judas is given bread dipped in sop
He leaves, as the story of Moses is given

With the third cup, by design
He mixed the water with the wine
As a sign of things yet to come
When they would pierce Him, though the Son

Love one another. The promise of peace.
The torn bread, He blessed the sacrament started here.
The Cup after Supper-the cup of
 redemption;
Not a dry eye, such were the tears

Jesus did not drink of the blood of the vine
It was His gift He left behind
In our hearts, Him we can find
We were not left in the world to walk blind

The Hallel, in praise they sang solemnly
Jesus was that God of the Old Testament
Their praise of deliverance took on new meaning
Of what they'd partaken had added significance

The fourth cup, our inheritance
Is for a later time, to be given
The cup of completion
We will all drink this one...with Him !

out of spiritual slavery
the bondage of sin
The end of the fear of death
For we will be with Him

“I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.
I will free you from being slaves to them
, and
I will redeem you
with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.
I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.”

[Exodus 6:6-7]

During the last supper, the disciples were given four cups of wine. Each have a purpose which varies a little as you search online. They are based on the four promises in Exodus 6

1.I will bring you out. slavery  (The blessing is said and the host washes his hands)
The Cup of Blessing or sanctification/
(out of the world and out of spiritual slavery of sin and the fear of death.)- the Kiddush, which means sanctification
2. I will rid you of bondage. liberty (The three unleavened matzah are brought out. The middle one
is broken in half and set aside. They represent the Godhead and Jesus is torn/ All wash their hands)  The washing of feet.
The Cup of Plagues
Before Eating-telling the story of the Passover/Exodus
the bitter herbs are eaten
Judas is given the bread dipped in sop.
3. I will take you for my people. covenant people- Love one another. The promise of peace. The         torn bread was blessed and torn as sacrament.    (Jesus did not drink the blood of the vine)
The Cup after Supper-the cup of redemption
became  The Blood of the sacrament.
Psalms 113 to 118 – the ‘hallel’, the praise psalms – are sung.
(in praise of the plagues that brought deliverance.)
4. I will be to you God. inheritance.
The cup of completion. We will drink this one with Him in our Father's kingdom.
FOUR PROMISES
6 Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments:
7 And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you God: and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.                      Exodus 6

John 13:1–35 1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. 2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him; 3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; 4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. 5 After that he poureth water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. 6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? 7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. 8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. 9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. 10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. 11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean. 12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? 13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. 16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. 17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. 18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. 19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he. 20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. 21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. 22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake. 23 Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake. 25 He then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it? 26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. 28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him. 29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. 30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night. 31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him. 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. 34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

The Appointed Hour

The night was lit by the full moon
Which cast the temple's shadow where
It added to the cloak of gloom
As the group walked away off there

Descending the city, weary
They crossed by a little brook
And soon passed the cemetery
On a path they often took

The grass was tall. It soaked each hem
In the garden where trees were budding
As they walked the wind howled, driven
Adding to the sense of foreboding

Christ's clothes grew heavy as did His heart
It became laborious to step
From the disciples, He turned to part
The appointed hour must be kept...

How many times had He been present
When the olives, here, were pressed?
History lay poised for this event
His deepest thoughts, He expressed

"My soul is very sorrowful."
This He compared even to death
The bitter cup was ever full
With a seemingly endless depth

Peter, James and John, He asked to watch keep
As a ways off the Lord went to pray alone
His friends proved weak and soon fell asleep
Indeed, this night, Christ was utterly on His own

for the appointed hour...

Many times during this month the dry desert winds would blow in for three days at a time, melting the snow, and quickening the vegetation. During this month the harvesting begins in the Jordan valley and on the coastal plain. The fruit trees are in blossom and show their young foliage. The peach, pomegranate, olive, and many more.

He's Been There Before

He's Been There Before by Elder Troy Whittle
The alarm bell rings at 6:30, I stumble to my feet
I grab my companions bedding and pull off his sheets
A groan fills the room, is it already time to arise?
It seems like just a second ago I was able to shut my eyes

The morning activities follow- study, prayer and such
When it's time to leave the apartment, you feel you haven't accomplished much
"We have a super day planned," My comp. says with a grin
I lowly utter a faithless breath, "Yeah, if anyone lets us in."

With the word of God and my faithful Schwinn, we ride off in the street prepared to
Face another day of humidity and heat
It's 9:30 in the evening, the day is almost through
My champion and I are riding home not accomplishing what we thought to do

We ride up to the mailbox, hoping to receive a lot
Only to look inside and hear my echo reverberate "air Box"
We go up to our apartment, the day is now complete
The only thing to show for our work is a case of blistery feet

It's past 10:30 p.m. My companion is fast asleep,
Silence engulfs me all about and I begin to weep
In the midst of sadness, I kneel down to pray
I need to talk to father, but I'm not sure what to say

"Oh, Father" I begin, "What happened to us today?
I thought we'd teach somebody, but everyone was away
My hands, my aching hands- worn, hurt and beat;
If our area was any smaller, we'd have knocked every street"

"Why on missions are the days so much alike?
The only difference about today was the flat tire on my bike
Will you send some cooler weather? The heat is killing me
I sweat so bad, it gets in my eyes, it's very hard to see"

"Why do I have to wear a helmet, isn't your protection enough?
People always laugh at me, and call me stupid stuff
Please send us investigators so I may give them what they lack
I want to give them Books of Mormon, the weight of them hurts my back"

"And what about my family: They don't have much to say
I'm sick of not hearing from home day after day after day
Oh Father, Why am I here am I just wasting time?
Sometimes I just want to go home, I'm sorry but that's on my mind"

"My companion, Heavenly Father, what are you giving me?
"The way he rides his bicycle, I don't think he can see
Now you have it, I can't go on, I don't know what to do
That, my Father in Heaven, is the prayer I have for you"

My prayer now finished, I stand up, then jump right into bed
I need my rest for tomorrow, we have another long day ahead
Sleep start to overtake me, I seem to drift away
Then it seems a vision takes me to another time in another day

I'm standing alone on the hill. The view is very nice
A man walks to wards me and says, "My name is Jesus Christ"
Tears of joy well up inside, I fall down to His feet
"Arise," He states, "Follow me to the shade. You and I need to speak"

My attention's towards my Savior, total and complete
He says, "Your mission is similar of what happened to me
I understand how you feel, I know what you're going through
In fact, it would be fair to say I've felt the same as you"

"I even know how you felt when no one listened to you
At times I felt not quite sure what else I could do
I know you don't like to ride a bicycle, for you a car would be sweet
Just remember the donkey I rode wasn't equipped with 21 speeds"

"I understand you don't like sweating, in fact it's something you hate
I remember when I sweat blood from ev’ry pore, oh the agony was great!
I see you don't like your companion- you'd rather have someone else-
I once had a companion named Judas who sold my life for wealth"

"It's hard to wear a helmet and have people make fun of you
I remember when they put thorns on my head and called me King of the Jews
So you feel burdened down by the weight of your pack
I recall how heavy the cross was when they slammed it on my back"

"Your hands hurt from tracting and knocking on doors all day
I guess when they pounded nails into mine, I ached in a similar way
It's hard not to hear from home when your family's not there to see
I lost communication on the cross and cried, "Father, why hast Thou forsaken me?"

"We have a lot in common, but there's a difference between us you see
I endured to the end and finished my mission, so follow and do like me"
He embraced me with His arms and His light filled me with His love
With tears in my eyes I watched as He went back to the Father above

I stood with awe and wonder when a beep rang in my head
I listened and heard the alarm, then realized I was in my bed
My companion let out a groan, "6:30 already, no way!"
I sat up and said, "Come on, I'll even carry your scriptures today!"

No matter what we go through, when we feel we can't take more
Just stop and think about Jesus Christ, He's been there before

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

These poems are my own thoughts and impressions as I study the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints

I encourage you to read from the Book of Mormon and the standard works, and listen to modern day prophets, also, that your mind and heart might be touched.
