Come and Let Us Go

Come and let us go
Inside the temple doors
Where through covenant work we'll know
Cherished wisdom that restores

Pay Off Thy Debt

Pay off thy debt
To the uttermost
Lest ye forget
The Holy Ghost

Reconcile
And repent
That Lucifer
Might relent

Thy righteousness
Should far exceed
Those caught in darkness
Who have need of thee

Praising Heavenly Father
Do what is right
That with thy brother
Ye might not fight

Matthew 5

13 ¶ Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
17 ¶ Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
21 ¶ Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

Oh, How the Wind Tossed

Oh, how the wind tossed
The disciples' ship
As upon the sea they crossed
On a long evening trip

They were but small
Against this big windstorm
And yet they stood up tall
When they saw a nearing form

Who could this be?
But a bad spirit come
Floating on the sea
To take away someone

Distressed at the sight
They cried out in fear
But... walking in the night
T'was the Lord who drew near

Having fed five thousand
Out along the shore
He walked out from the sand
To teach us all but more...

With waves all around
Midst the buffeting sea
The Lord was safe and sound
"Do not fear," out called He

Then Peter challenged
Could he walk there too?
Leaving the boat's edge
This he sought to do

With his faith uplifted
He walked upon the sea
But soon his thoughts drifted
That, while sinking, he did plea

Then proving once again
Who is mighty to save
The Lord stretched forth His hand
And pulled him from his grave

When come into the ship
The mighty winds did cease
The disciples on this trip
Learned what put them at ease

They once again had proof
Of the power of the Master
The Son of God of a truth
Had saved them from disaster

We too are prone to cave
When in peril we are falling
Yet, He who is mighty to save
Hears each prayerful calling

Come Family and Let us Go

Come family and let us go
Unto the House of the Lord
For there we'll more fully know
The sure pathway that's adored

Our Changing World

Only misery and heartache awaits
Those who live their lives in transgression
For the world loveth their own and of God hate
Unto pride and stumbling for one's progression

But man's strength and power can be multiplied
By learning and observing the commandments of God
Thus becoming His Saints with sins denied
There to benefit those both near and abroad

We do not claim to be superior
But believe each problem is best solved
When we apply the plan that's been set forth
There to be educated and spiritually evolved

Each contribution we make to this world
Lays an example that good might roll forth
That the gospel light might enlarge and unfurl
For each man to recognize a celestial worth

To do that which glorifies God does elevate
Unto being the salt of the earth full of savour
Where we put our light upon the hill to demonstrate
That our good works and deeds are from and for the Savior

In this day, as knowledge speedily unfolds
The world increases in confusion and unease
Let us remain brightly pure like unto gold
And from earthly impurities be refined and find peace

John 15:19
18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

Matthew 5:13-16

Oft While I Am Sleeping

Oft while I am sleeping
I forget that you are dead
And when the floor is creaking
I arize up from my bed

But, then I remember
And feel my loss anew
This precious time of slumber
Is my only time with you

Although I Have Five Senses

Although you have departed
You're heard inside my head
For I'm oft found warm hearted
By the past words you have said

Although I have five senses
That serve me all so well
It's my sense of hearing
That makes my heart now swell

A Fatherly Impression

A fatherly impression
That is ever good and kind
Is made through conference sessions
Unto assurance there to find

As though priesthood hands are laying
Blessings extend sure and true
As from God- each sentence is saying:
"I love each and every one of you!"

Let us watch the Apostles speak
And imagine what their hands might do
For through them come blessings we seek
As in joy and purpose we renew

My Dad Has Left an Imprint

My dad has left an imprint
Upon my heart and mind
In me varieties do hint
Of his qualities there to find

Hear him in my voice so strong?
Or see him in my stance?
I am growing- it won't be long
That you'll take a second glance

How I want to be more like him
And learn what makes him tick
For he is part of who I am
Through the thin and through the thick

Father how I love you
Your strengths I want to own
And of all the things you do
Your service stands alone

Thank you for repairing
All the things that I broke
For the priesthood you are bearing
And the prayers which you invoke

I Waited For You By the Window

I waited for you by the window
Anxiously desiring to know
And the look on your face was my answer
For your happiness beautifully glowed

Now everything has come together
Like sunshine promising good weather
And blessings from heaven are descending
To send you off to an all new endeavor

These days of trials have made you more certain
That the direction you've prayed for is true
You've been blessed through the struggle of burden
With an abundant strength to achieve and then do

You Don't Have to Be a Sleuth

You don't have to be a sleuth
To detect the devil
With an armory of truth
You'll deflect what's evil

So, lay the foundation
Of purpose and security
Through a righteous education
Unto spiritual maturity

"Your efforts to distill truth from reading and pondering the scriptures, from analyzing and striving to understand the inspired messages of the prophets, will provide you with an armory of truth. That truth will protect you from evil influences and lay a foundation for happiness, security, and purpose in your life. It will help you make correct choices. Initially these truths are accepted on faith. The confirming witness of their validity comes as you apply them in your life and as you express gratitude for the growth, maturity, and blessings that come from their use. That confirmation strengthens your capacity to discipline your life to avoid those things you know to be unproductive and harmful. Such a witness provides encouragement and the confidence to center your life in the teachings of the Savior and the plan of happiness of the Father."

Mourning for
My dear departed

And I'm breathless
I feel bereft
And oh, so restless!

I Too Am Now in Poverty

I must be patient in my poverty
And watchful unto temptations
For that which I endure prayerfully
Becomes my best education

I'll not revile with those who've cast me out
But live in thanksgiving humbly and daily
The devil can not overpower me unto doubt
As my knees greet the dusty floor without wailing

I know and I've firm hope
That one day there will be true rest
With Christ, I can bear all things and cope
For this is my life, this is my test

So, flee, thou contention
Contenders- I'll not be like you
For spirit and truth grants extension
And God's mercy will see me through

I'll picture the warmest hug
Like the colors of the sunset
And of my troubles I will shrug
For I've blessings, I shall not forget!

Alma 34:38-41

That ye contend no more against the Holy Ghost, but that ye receive it, and take upon you the name of Christ; that ye humble yourselves even to the dust, and worship God, in whatsoever place ye may be in, in spirit and in truth; and that ye live in thanksgiving daily, for the many mercies and blessings which he doth bestow upon you.
Yea, and I also exhort you, my brethren, that ye be watchful unto prayer continually, that ye may not be led away by the temptations of the devil, that he may not overpower you, that ye may not become his subjects at the last day; for behold, he rewardeth you no good thing.
And now my beloved brethren, I would exhort you to have patience, and that ye bear with all manner of afflictions; that ye do not revile against those who do cast you out because of your exceeding poverty, lest ye become sinners like unto them;
But that ye have patience, and bear with those afflictions, with a firm hope that ye shall one day rest from all your afflictions.

I am a Teacher

I am a teacher
My students can not defeat me
The girl dreaming, I will reach her
And the boys screaming will not unseat me

I'll persist in my cause
And insist they're to learn
We'll reestablish school laws
And to our books we'll return

With Spring's bloom in the air
I've children given to drifting
But, each must stay in their chair
Or I'll wave my finger with "if" ing!

Our Nation Was Founded

Our nation was founded
Upon righteous principles and thought
As outcry was sounded
The battle for freedom was fought

With this sense of community
Each man rose to the call
And in the name of unity
Sacrificed to give his all

How could one prosper
When taxes don't support
Only fairness is proper
When ruled from own courts

Now as a country
Do we value our roots?
Do we strive to agree?
And resolve all disputes?

Perhaps what is needed
Is a return to God
For when He is heeded
Opportunities are broad

The blessing pour about
Upon homes and neighbors
And there is little doubt
That we gain from our labors

America must be reborn
And treasure liberty
Through a vote for reform
Unto righteous dignity

Choices are Good

Choices are good
Though they make me crazy
Could, would, and should
Help me not be lazy

Jesus Christ the Master Healer 2

Why did the Savior suffer for me?
He must know and love me so deeply!
My debt to Him is incalculably great.
For He bore my pains and sins, even hate!
What power was His to carry this load?
He our promise of a heavenly abode

When I've sore trials that I must bear,
I'll deepen my faith and trust He is there.
I know He can heal wounds and broken hearts.
That peace and comfort, His Spirit imparts.
His gift to each can't be destroyed by death.
For I know He grants me His living breath.

The Master Healer in perfect frame,
Gives resurrection to those once lame.
Am I not also in need of healing?
Thanks to Him, tender mercy I am feeling.
Thanks to Him, I've hope and bright days ahead.
As He heals me, with His water and bread.

I Miss You

I miss you
I would kiss you
All day long and half the night
You thrill me
And fulfill me
You make my world feel right

signed Ricky Miller

At This Time

At this time we can't feel close
As we've naught to see eye to eye
But, I'm not hopeless or morose
Nor am I given to outcry

I saw you on the street
And you looked away quickly
And when I ran up to greet
You acted stiff and sickly

Let not our bridge be burned
Neither at the head nor the end
That when to me you've returned
I can be counted as your friend

My Heart is Ever Pained Within Me

My heart is ever pained within me
As to terrible sins men are falling
Fearful and trembling, I'm overwhelmed
As their wicked feet sound their calling

How shall I hasten for my escape?
Amidst this sinful storm-like tempest
Oh, that I had dove wings or a cape
To fly far away unto peace and rest

Their tongues combine where e'er they meet
As day and night they walk past my walls
Deceit and guile depart not from the streets
Yet, the worst- You, dear friend, fell to their calls

From an enemy, I could have borne it
But, you have always been my bright star
And now a worse feeling won't let
For, of them, I would have hid myself far

Evening, morning, and noon now I pray
O'er my long acquaintance, my equal- often
That his words, like butter, will melt away
And that war in his heart, like oil, will soften

Here lies the pit of destruction
As those who thwart peace, work evil till smoothed
I must beware and believe in God's instruction
For He shall never suffer the righteous be moved

Psalms 55
David prays morning, noon, and night—
He seeks protection and help against his enemies.
TO THE CHIEF MUSICIAN ON NEGINOTH, MASCHIL, A PSALM OF DAVID.
1 Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not thyself from my supplication.
2 Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise;
3 Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me.
4 My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me.
5 Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.
6 And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.
7 Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. Selah.
8 I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.
9 Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
10 Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.
11 Wickedness is in the midst thereof: deceit and guile depart not from her streets.
12 For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:
13 But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.
14 We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.
15 Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.
16 As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lord shall save me.
17 Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.
18 He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with me.
19 God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.
20 He hath put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him: he hath broken his covenant.
21 The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.
22 Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
23 But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

The Bearers of the Holy Priesthood

The bearers of the holy priesthood
Will offer up the sacrament
Soon, they'll stand as though the Lord here stood
To grant us a sacred moment

That as we partake of His emblems
We do it by way of command
That we may be found through repentance
We're spotless to live out God's plan

This Sunday is our day for learning
The Sabbath is a holy day
That as to our covenants we're turning
The press of the world falls away

As we think of the Lord's sacrifice
We ponder and too remember
That only broken hearts will suffice
As with His name we're a member

Ensign, May 2006,

Come Let us Go Up to the Mountain of the Lord

Come, let us oft go up
To the mountain of the Lord
There to find strength enough
To live as one favored

Come, let us oft wash clean
For those once upon the earth
And prepare them for a holy sheen
Unto covenants of eternal worth

Come, let us oft ponder
The beauty of purity
For therein we don't wander
From our path of surety

Come, let us praise virtue
And write our loyalty upon a banner
As on gold cloth, we commit to be true
And show all the Lord's high standards

Then let it wave beneath the clouds
And reminds us of our focus
That when immorality crowds
We can realign from what chokes us

Come let us find the road less traveled
With cairns placed along to find our way
On this path we'll not get lost or raveled
As they're placed to assure us lest we delay

Virtue Written in the Heart

Virtue that's ever written
Deep inside the heart
Yields such purity within
That quality sets one apart

For, as though made of gold
One's refined unto trust
Till integrity shines so bold
That one walks away from lusts

One that's spiritually attracted
Waits for eternal love that's pure
And from the temple is not distracted
There to glow with beauty that endures

One that rises to the Lord's mountain
Has a virtuous life that shows so well
For it's refreshed by living fountains
As through purity the heart does swell

One finds of the lord's standards
They are ever true and absolute
For He leads as a wise shepherd
Unto the highest of all pursuits:

On the path back to Heavenly Father
There to be found clean in His presence
And called forth as precious sons and daughters
Kings and queens of body to luminescence

Shall We Raise More Monuments

Shall we raise more monuments
Along the Mormon trail?
One, each there to represent
A life that was curtailed?

If we laid tombstones side by side
It would be miles before we're done
There to honor those who died
And name them one by one

Shall we lay them out in order?
And give honor to how they tried
For they kept to the trail's border
And their faith was not denied

Shall we mention how they suffered?
And went without and sacrificed?
How, to the last breath they offered
Consecration for Jesus Christ?

And with the monuments lined up
Shall we walk the trail with them?
And let their lives speak much to us?
As blessed roots from which we stem

6,000 pioneers lost their lives
on the trail west between 1847 and 1869

The Canker of Contention

The canker of contention
Is like a spreading sore
It can extend its infection
From just one to more and more

It's a disease that undermines
Till the spirit is driven away
And as it's a form of pride
It casts deception on our day

Peace is that which comes from above
Even, from the Prince of Peace himself
And contention is the lack there of
With the center of attention on one's self

If ever hearts of men are stirred to anger
Or to spreading rumors across the land
Let them be warned- there in is danger
For they're acting out at Satan's command

As he is the creator of contention
He'll try to gain personal acclaim over all
To turn hearts against that which is good
There to bring man unto conflict and brawl

As though with a loaded gun he aims
At family, church leaders, and divine doctrine
He shoots at the heart to take his game
As he creates discord till in pride each hardens

Now those who stir up contention
Attack, provoke, and agitate
As they work the paths of dissension
They become impenitent and filled with hate

He who is filled with such wrath and scorn
Is committed to the use of force for reform
And this has been Satan's strategy since the start
That he might win his battle and prove his part

How divisive is this evil force
That none can assume they've immunity
And must heed leaders who to us discourse
To keep hearts knit in love and unity

Shall we wrest the scriptures?
Or play the devil's advocate?
These are but contending adventures
That grasp at us till it's love we forget

The Book of Mormon teaches a better way
That we should look forward with just one eye
Having one baptism and, in God, one faith
There to know the peace of Jesus Christ

Let us hold each other in high esteem
And when comes conflict, let there be respect
That naught we do is for vain glory's gleam
But, that our love of God to all will reflect

Then the fiery pain of contention
Will simply be extinguished
As we see things with new dimensions
That aren't hard, unbridled, and anguished

In the Shadow of the Temple

In the shadow of the temple
I vow to attend as I should
To then bless mine and God's people
Doing work that is ever good

May I make new preparations
That at a session there is one more
Bringing names for participation
Let naught interrupt what I've planned for

Richard G. Scott
Ensign, May 2009,

He is

He is the sunlight in the morning
That brings us hope unto strength forming

He is the shepherd ever calling
That lifts us up whene'er we're falling

He is the life bread we're found eating
That nourishes at sabbath meeting

He is the master in the vinyard
That prunes us much, outward and inward

He is the fountain from which we drink
And He's our Savior- our heavenly link

But, most of all
He is the servant in submission
Ever obedient in His comission

He is the first born, offering all
There to redeem man from Adam's own fall

He is the scapegoat at the passover
Sentenced with man's sins, till it was all over

We are His children, born of His pain
And He will return, to rule and to reign

We are His betrothed, He is the groom
And we wait with oil that our light might bloom

Have a Challenge and Go for the Victory!

Have a challenge,
Go for the victory!
Aim to be known
And make history!

This is our time
For excellence
While tempering much
Through obedience

This is our time
To find our path
This is our time
To escape from wrath

Might we seek God
To develop in full
Might we in life
For this is our school

The Mother's Child Safe from Harm

The small babe safe in mother's arms
Coos and smiles with much charm
And lights the room up, with sweet love
This precious cargo from above

With pats to the back, ever soft
The baby yawns and then nods off
To then become still, unto rest
Tucked securely at mother's breast

As sweet little sounds then begin
A measure of love stirs within
And mother, content, drifts to sleep
In peaceful slumber yet watch keep

The Heavens Weep and Watch Keep

Know ye not that when we weep
God would that we pray
For His tears don't ever sleep
And His compassion, does not fray

Not only Him,
But the angels too
For we are loved by them
And they offer hope anew

In our loneliest of hours
Extremity teaches us
That there's comfort God showers
As we appreciate Jesus

Through the spirit, one sees
That times dark and troubled
Are well spent on our knees
For, then, we rise blessed and ennobled

Thus always we need
This sobering reminder:
That our Lord does lead
And the searcher is the finder

To each will come the call
To face times painful and deep
To know our Lord endured them all
And stands by us to watch keep

What love has been born for us!
That in God's plan, we may pass the test
As we learn to plead and trust
Unto eternal hope and rest

We'll Not Take Counsel From our Fears

When there's evidence that Satan nears
We'll not take counsel from our fears
For we see there is so much to do
And we've not time to be anxious too

And since we know it's foolish to act in haste
We'll apply prayer whene'er fear gives to chase
For we're determined to live the good life
Where there is strength to see us through strife

Your Temper Was So Brisk

Your temper was so brisk
You flipped and took the risk
And while your manners waned
In selfishnes more you gained

You noticed not at all
Just how close the call
T'was I who braked to swerve
And rambled of your nerve

Then up ahead the light
Signaled red your flight
While behind you did stop
The alerted traffic cop

A Flower is a Special Thing

A flower is a special thing
To hold, to smell, to touch
So might this flower say to you
"I love you very much!"

With a Whoosh of Wind I Enter

With a whoosh of wind I enter
Unto a place of peace and rest
As double doors outwards filter
And invite me to come as my best

Each inside quietly welcome
Offering greetings as a host
Here I find strength, wisdom
And holiness which I need most

I am inside of God's temple
Through grace and a recommend
Here to bless mine and His people
Through His sure covenants that transcend

Here I learn of what's timeless
And become linked to my kin
Here I ascend for what's breathless
From endowments, my sealing begins!

Here the words settle and swell
To reach inside of my soul
What joy I feel, I cannot tell
But, I liken it to feeling whole

Sometimes

Sometimes I cry with the want
To make my feelings known
But, ofttimes, I am left to hunt
As even to me they aren't shown

Then, as though a dam is burst
What's alive in me does flow
And let's pass what built up first
Unto power there to grow

Mom, You Are Made of Such

A flower is a special thing
To hold, to smell, to touch
Like this one, I am offering
You are also made of such

Your treats are warm and gooey
Your gifts bring joyful tears
Our home is such a beauty
There's a fragrance as one nears

On this day let there be rest
With time to reminisce
Recall the memories that are choicest
Wedding days. A grandchild's kiss

A flower is a special thing
To hold, to smell, to touch
It fills the air with scents of Spring
And, Mother, you are made of such

Your treats are warm and gooey
Your song's delight our ears
You've filled our home with such beauty
That there's fragrance as one nears

On this day may we give you rest?
That you might stop to reminisce
To fill us with memories best
For you are ever a part of us

Did You Hear?

Did you hear the birds out singing?
It's the mornings that they own
For while we are yet sleeping
They call, "let the new day be known!"

For while the sun has not made light
It must be time to arise
To wipe away the long night
And heed the clear song of the wise

Mothers Are Our Flowers

Come, Dear Mother, smell this rose
I hold to you to show
Let it kiss upon your sweet nose
Let its fragrance to you flow

Mother, you are as this flower
That blooms to please our sight
As from it God's own love doth shower
With wondrous beauty bright

Come, Dear Mother, smell this rose
I hold to you to show
Let it kiss upon your sweet nose
Let its fragrance to you flow

As Mother's love is so refreshing
May this image be as clear
That in my life, you're such a blessing
Thanks for tenderness and tears

The Chatter of the Birds

The chatter of the birds
Tends to tatter on the nerves
When we're too busy to enjoy
Their songs of delight and joy

And to this wise harried mother
Their song was so filled with need
That she whispered, "not another
I have my own mouths to feed!"

The mother in her could not hide!
Their frantic peeps weren't far
So she peeked her head outside
Then, with love, cried, "how cute they are..."

This is true of each mother
Who hears "Mom" where e'er she goes
And with compassion like no other
Her love t'wards babies outward flows

The Light Through the Window

The light through the window
Is brilliant indeed
When God's wisdom we follow
And the Spirit does lead

May a Constant Flow of Love

May a constant flow of love
Pour down upon our prophet
That there be not but room enough
Amongst the Saints for profit

Let this love spill o'er the earth
To bless the minds who've been prepared
That their souls may then rebirth
From the rich feelings there in shared

May we ever pray to God
For there in we have joy to own
While kneeling upon gospel sod
May new impressions be made known

May we ever sustain new
Those who lead the church today
As for wisdom we pray too
Unto confidence there to obey

May I humbly make a comment here. The first two lines are from a prayer I said the night before. I wrote them down and went to sleep. The next morning I awoke to birds singing at 5:15 and I played on the piano. I then wrote two poems. I kept having poems come to me, including this one. I even wrote one on the way to work. While telling a teacher I thought of another. And then upon telling another teacher, I wrote one more. Eight in total- and all before my teaching day started! This takes having a prayer in your heart to new meaning for me. What a day to remember. What a day of overflowing love!

Here We Sit in the Chapel

Here we sit in the chapel
Renewing our covenants
To partake and to sample
Holiness and reverence

Each hymn calms one to turning
T'wards thoughts of our heavenly home
Wherein we've love and yearning
The sweetest joy to be known

Here we come to be made clean
And be washed of our sins
As what from the Lord we do glean
Unto light that never ends!

You've Such a Goodly Face

You've such a goodly face
That you've lived well, I can tell
And the joy that you embrace
Overflows to me to swell!

You see the world with delight
With colors that are rich
And the evenings you make bright
With thoughts that do enrich!

Time doth show on every man
And it wears upon our skin
It does more than place a tan
But proves us, what's within!

After all, that is beauty
When our spirit doth shine through
After all, that is beauty
When we're spiritually renewed!

Sometimes I Forget to Call or Write

Sometimes I forget to call or write
And I know that often you hope I might..
Perhaps this is why this day started too
To remind grown children of what they should do...

Sometimes I don't tell you what you mean to me
When from you and because of you, I have come to be!

Sometimes I call to you, just to know that I'm loved
Like a hurt child running just to be hugged

It is you who has loved me with purity
And has given me comfort, warmth, and security

I want to say thankyou for your ever listening ear
For the way that you can calm me back unto good cheer

I want to say thankyou for giving me so much
For through you and because of you I have learned to trust

I thank you on this special day of the year
For all that you've given, how I love you, mother dear

I hope I can become more and more like you
And become tender and loving in all that I do

Frittering

Frittering fills our house with stuff
When will we ever say enough?
And since we're both guilty as charged
Our storage space must be enlarged

Rick's still in LasVegas
Kelly in San Jose
Packing's not the greatest
But, Rick says it's okay

Combatting Spiritual Drift- Our Global Pandemic

The world ever moves with enhancements
As we invest mostly unto advancements
And what we find that's been left far behind
Is growth and pursuit of the spiritual kind

If we had more faith, we'd see all kinds of healings
As we'd bond in brotherhood, through sacred feelings
There to share convictions within our hearts
There to serve and bless, with each doing their part

With naught but heartfelt appreciation
We can renew Christ-like love and dedication
There to promote goodwill, and peace on earth
Unto a global trend of spiritual rebirth

May we each engage in this worthwhile quest
And feel afresh the breath of life unto rest
May we spread love and concern from land to land
As though offering God's hand to another's hand

The Ultimate Irony of Eternity

The ultimate irony of eternity
Comes as one escapes true identity
And becomes an unembodied character
As, in a sense, an earth life defector

Then with the concentration of a mindless addict
Technology is used in such a way to afflict
As it destroys our purpose and relationships
Our ability, reality, and each stewardship

Then, as the cyberspace game continues
Laws are virtually violated unto new venues
As what's mere creation is ever displayed
Where it can be repeatedly viewed and replayed

Despite Challenges and Trials in Life

Despite the many challenges and trials in life
A woman was strengthened to daily face strife
For as she trusted in God, she came to know
That the struggle to endure is the best way to grow

In the habit of recording events that did churn
Her gratitude for the atonement warmed within to burn
For with each stretch to o'ercome, much was attained
That through blessings from God, self confidence was gained

According to all the ways mortal man does vary
Our Savior has acquired a perfect way to carry
Weaknesses and circumstances proven to be hard
Help our faith stay fixedly to God in regard

Adversity comes as a time to change and refine
That our character straightens, unto God, to align
For, as we look up, reassurance brings peace
That despite it all, in us, much will increase

So sisters, when challenges come, as surely they must
Let us look and rely upon, ever our Lord, Jesus

The Captain of the Soul- Invictus/ The Soul's Captain by Elder Orson F. Whitney

Invictus by William E. Henley
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance,
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

The Soul's Captain [The Answer]
by Elder Orson F. Whitney
of the Quorum of the Twelve
Art thou in truth? Then what of him
Who bought thee with his blood?
Who plunged into devouring seas
And snatched thee from the flood?
Who bore for all our fallen race
What none but him could bear.
The God who died that man might live,
And endless glory share?
Of what avail thy vaunted strength,
Apart from his vast might?
Pray that his Light may pierce the gloom,
That thou mayest see aright.
Men are as bubbles on the wave,
As leaves upon the tree.
Thou, captain of thy soul, forsooth
Who gave that place to thee?
Free will is thine — free agency
To wield for right or wrong;
But thou must answer unto him
To whom all souls belong.
Bend to the dust that head "unbowed,"
Small part of Life's great whole!
And see in him, and him alone,
The Captain of thy soul

He's Been There Before

He's Been There Before by Elder Troy Whittle
The alarm bell rings at 6:30, I stumble to my feet
I grab my companions bedding and pull off his sheets
A groan fills the room, is it already time to arise?
It seems like just a second ago I was able to shut my eyes

The morning activities follow- study, prayer and such
When it's time to leave the apartment, you feel you haven't accomplished much
"We have a super day planned," My comp. says with a grin
I lowly utter a faithless breath, "Yeah, if anyone lets us in."

With the word of God and my faithful Schwinn, we ride off in the street prepared to
Face another day of humidity and heat
It's 9:30 in the evening, the day is almost through
My champion and I are riding home not accomplishing what we thought to do

We ride up to the mailbox, hoping to receive a lot
Only to look inside and hear my echo reverberate "air Box"
We go up to our apartment, the day is now complete
The only thing to show for our work is a case of blistery feet

It's past 10:30 p.m. My companion is fast asleep,
Silence engulfs me all about and I begin to weep
In the midst of sadness, I kneel down to pray
I need to talk to father, but I'm not sure what to say

"Oh, Father" I begin, "What happened to us today?
I thought we'd teach somebody, but everyone was away
My hands, my aching hands- worn, hurt and beat;
If our area was any smaller, we'd have knocked every street"

"Why on missions are the days so much alike?
The only difference about today was the flat tire on my bike
Will you send some cooler weather? The heat is killing me
I sweat so bad, it gets in my eyes, it's very hard to see"

"Why do I have to wear a helmet, isn't your protection enough?
People always laugh at me, and call me stupid stuff
Please send us investigators so I may give them what they lack
I want to give them Books of Mormon, the weight of them hurts my back"

"And what about my family: They don't have much to say
I'm sick of not hearing from home day after day after day
Oh Father, Why am I here am I just wasting time?
Sometimes I just want to go home, I'm sorry but that's on my mind"

"My companion, Heavenly Father, what are you giving me?
"The way he rides his bicycle, I don't think he can see
Now you have it, I can't go on, I don't know what to do
That, my Father in Heaven, is the prayer I have for you"

My prayer now finished, I stand up, then jump right into bed
I need my rest for tomorrow, we have another long day ahead
Sleep start to overtake me, I seem to drift away
Then it seems a vision takes me to another time in another day

I'm standing alone on the hill. The view is very nice
A man walks to wards me and says, "My name is Jesus Christ"
Tears of joy well up inside, I fall down to His feet
"Arise," He states, "Follow me to the shade. You and I need to speak"

My attention's towards my Savior, total and complete
He says, "Your mission is similar of what happened to me
I understand how you feel, I know what you're going through
In fact, it would be fair to say I've felt the same as you"

"I even know how you felt when no one listened to you
At times I felt not quite sure what else I could do
I know you don't like to ride a bicycle, for you a car would be sweet
Just remember the donkey I rode wasn't equipped with 21 speeds"

"I understand you don't like sweating, in fact it's something you hate
I remember when I sweat blood from ev’ry pore, oh the agony was great!
I see you don't like your companion- you'd rather have someone else-
I once had a companion named Judas who sold my life for wealth"

"It's hard to wear a helmet and have people make fun of you
I remember when they put thorns on my head and called me King of the Jews
So you feel burdened down by the weight of your pack
I recall how heavy the cross was when they slammed it on my back"

"Your hands hurt from tracting and knocking on doors all day
I guess when they pounded nails into mine, I ached in a similar way
It's hard not to hear from home when your family's not there to see
I lost communication on the cross and cried, "Father, why hast Thou forsaken me?"

"We have a lot in common, but there's a difference between us you see
I endured to the end and finished my mission, so follow and do like me"
He embraced me with His arms and His light filled me with His love
With tears in my eyes I watched as He went back to the Father above

I stood with awe and wonder when a beep rang in my head
I listened and heard the alarm, then realized I was in my bed
My companion let out a groan, "6:30 already, no way!"
I sat up and said, "Come on, I'll even carry your scriptures today!"

No matter what we go through, when we feel we can't take more
Just stop and think about Jesus Christ, He's been there before

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

These poems are my own thoughts and impressions as I study the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints

I encourage you to read from the Book of Mormon and the standard works, and listen to modern day prophets, also, that your mind and heart might be touched.
