A Mormon Olympian

A dynamic duo
Both a fish and a fisherman
Of the US and Bolivia
He is a Mormon Olympian

David Barton on Glenn Beck, Christianity and society

Open your mind
Light enters in
Culture to find
God wins in the end

Glenn Beck - Restoring Love 7-28-12

I'll stand with anyone
Who is willing to fight
To restore America
As a source of light

No bigotries here
All are needed
To brightly appear
Undefeated

Glenn Beck - Restoring Love 7-28-12

Be a beacon of light
For someone else
Turn the world aright
Be a source of help

Duty and Purpose

Duty and purpose
Courage and honor
Demanded his service
As our nation's father

Again and again
He could not be releaved
For it caused him great pain
When we faltered, he grieved

Signs of the Son of Man

With sincerity of effort
My journey began
To find the signs still present
Of the Son of Man

And I in my weakness
Sought the talents I'd need
I found His light strengthens
As well as does lead

In God's pattern of strength and love
Answers come from those around us
For searching alone is not enough
To understand one's purpose

In the land of ancient ruins
One can walk the paths that Jesus walked
Slowing down to become in tune
To the places He lived, served, and taught

Our Inheritance

Thousands Gather For Glenn Beck’s ‘Restoring Love’ Event At Cowboys Stadium « CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

Our inheritance
Is a promised land of peace.
Through benevolence
We invest, improve, and increase.

As we give service
It's love we restore
This is our purpose
Good works to perform

We have courage to stand
And support our community
We offer up a hand
And share of faith, hope, and charity

Answer Your Call

A great gift gone wrong
May still increase, seen strong
But, one day it will fall
Having not answered its call

Answer your call
Have faith through it all
Be strong and fit
See the benefit

Persistence

Persistence cannot be replaced
With talents, genius, or position
Prove your commitment,show your face
Earn respect through your decisions

Show Respect

To show your respect
Be prompt, plan ahead
Mingle, connect
And show you're well-bred

Patriotic Service

Service to your country
Never really ends
With the war cry drumming
Re-enlistment begins

Communism

Regrettably, when left to ourselves
We are unfit for fair government
For as the battle for equality swells
The cry for communism laments

Truth

Your version of the truth
Is not all that exists
To new thoughts don't be alloof
Having all the facts assists

If we are seeking for great truth
We must follow where it leads us
Unafraid to raise the roof
To expose each fatal weakness

Commitment

Gossipers and naysayers
May try to distract you
But regardless of who betrays
Commitment sees you through

Victory

Yes, there will be mountains to climb
And many comforts to sacrifice
Though burdens rack your soul at times
Victory comes with a high price

Make a Difference

Unafraid to make a comment
Or to be seen as different
You prepare well for that moment
Where you can make a difference

Reaching the Soul of Man

Softspokenness, meekness,
And humility in crisis
These are what best reaches
The soul when life tries us

Pondering
Glenn Beck
Being George Washington

Traits We Need

Character, trust, and honor
These are traits that we need
In a modern day father
Who for this country will lead

Prudence

Prudence is exhausting
Much must be weighed to remove all doubt
Though at times frustrating
This is what wise, good men are about

www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/prudence
the ability to govern and discipline oneself by the use of reason

Brass Serpent

Look to the brass serpent
Marvelous to behold
Apply simple obedience
You have covenants to uphold

The Powers of Heaven - David A. Bednar - April 2012 General Conference

The powers of heaven
Have been laid upon man
Divine authority given
To be the Lord's own hands

Those worthy and found willing
Receive what comes of the Lord
His purposes fulfilling
As righteousness is adored

From the young to the old
Duty to God is conferred
As through covenant they hold
What, from above, is offered

The sick and the afflicted
Those desiring to be clean
Are in Christ perfected
And miracles are seen

A Good and Great Man

A good and great man
Stands above the crowd
To lead in goodness and
Make his fellows proud

Never to overtower
Or cause to shake or bend
But to instill power
As good wins in the end

Pondering Glenn Beck's Being George Washington.

Resentment

Resentment is a fuel
Promising an end
But it soon consumes the fool
Who thinks it is a friend

One of the great strengths of George Washington was Civility.  Reading Glenn Beck's book
Being George Washington.

Skill Can be Used for Good or Bad

Skill can be used for good or bad
According to one's power and will
But in the end, we'll wish we had
Used them well, for talents to fulfill

A gift that has gone wrong
For a while holds great power
But it will not last forever strong
Unsupported in death's hour

I would love comments.
Who can you name in history that used their skill for good and great things, and turned to doing bad things with power.  A gift gone wrong...
An example is Benedict Arnold known for victory in the battle.  He married a loyalist and betrayed his friends, his career, and his country.  Reading Glenn Beck's Being George Washington.

Honor

Honor does not waver
As does the ever fickle wind
Bur remains solidly clever
To not cower or seek revenge

Honor does not hold a chip
To wear heavily on a shoulder
Nor does it smolder and gossip
But speaks up with a voice grown bolder

For honor stands the test of time
As a constant flowing stream
That causes the wise to climb
To fulfill the highest dreams

The Providential Train

The providential train
Affords convincing proof
Teaching us again and again
God leads us along the way of truth

The providential train
Affords convincing proof
That there is much to gain
Being on the side of truth

An Invisible Hand

An invisible hand
Watches over this land
Not to save us from labor
But to be the best neighbor

The Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence
Stirred the hearts of foreign lands
That the individual through persistence
Could prosper by the labor of his two hands

It was Her Beauty that Killed the Beast

It was her beauty that killed the beast
As her scream silenced her career
But she still had her family, at least
Who from pain provided a buffer

Known for your Scream

Known for your scream
How can this be?
Like a dark dream
Fear of death's seen

America the Melting Pot

America, the melting pot
Of people and ideas
From its infancy has fought,
Under God, bigotries

Touched reading Glenn Becks book:
Being George Washington and the change  that happened at Valley Forge when slaves were offered freedom in exchange for fighting.  There were no bigotries and his troupes became only stronger.

We are Your Best Friend

Countries that long to be free
We are your best friend
Raise your flag of liberty
And what we can we will send

Mr. President

Mr. President,

Rise above the noise
And speak of what is great
Be a sounding voice
And answer to your fate

Recall events in time
Where truth and right prevailed
Help us as a people climb
To where goodness cannot fail

In a Spiritual Bubble

In a spiritual bubble
Serving the Lord
I felt safe from trouble
As in truth, I soared

As Fresh as a Daisy

As fresh as a daisy
That burst from a bud
I open up daily
To love from above

The light is so grand
I wear my best face
Made brilliant and
Life I embrace

Pondering the wild daisies along the Corpus Christi beach.

Wounded

Wounded by each word
I had to find rest
And looking heavenward
Comfort filled my breast

The grumpy words had hit my heart
Sharp, they were meant to cut me off
To strike back, what would that start?
This battle was mine to stop

Time away was what I needed
To understand and forgive
Thankful I am that I heeded
The better way to live and love

I Can't Believe He Brought Me This Far Just to Leave Me

I can't believe he brought me this far just to leave me
In the wilderness all alone
For wings of faith, I pray, fully grieving
And tender mercy, I am shown

A crippled dove lands on my head
And I recognize God's hand because of it
Once filled with pity, I feel blessed instead
As through these borrowed wings I benefit

This is my story in the wilderness.  Divorced from my Mormon family, grieving the loss of my once Father-in-Law... dove did land on my head!

Love at First Sight

Love at first sight
Is a fit made right
God, making it strong
Yes, the two belong!

There is so much to say
As two hearts cleave
And at the end of the day
Neither wants to leave

With this longing it is clear
True love is meant to stay
Each memory more dear
Completes another day

Love at first sight
A spiritual connection
Makes the world bright
Pointed in the right direction

Going Back to Being a Child One More Time

Going back to being a child one more time
I raced the sandy beach with rocks to climb
I captured all I could and caused tentacles to close
As with each wave I caught sand between my toes.

I built a castle, moat, and wall
And dared all to cause it to fall
As the clouds came I shook my towel,
Checked my sunburn, picked up my trowel

And with the wind whipping my back
I went inside for a summer's nap
And dreamed of sea and foam
Adrift safely at home

Save Yourself Lose Yourself in Service

Save yourself
Lose yourself
In service find purpose
Be a light
That is bright
With love and delight

A Thought is Not Complete

A thought is not complete
Till it leads one unto action
Conquering doubt for a feat
That builds satisfaction

feat - definition of feat by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and ...

www.thefreedictionary.com/feat
A notable act or deed, especially an act of courage; an exploit. 2. An act of skill, endurance, imagination, or strength; an achievement.

Of a Father Much is RECQUIRED

Of a father, much is recquired
Determination being the first
For this calling will never expire
And diligence is needed through the worst

Largely Who I am Today

Largely who I am today
I owe to Heavenly Father
He gave me a family who brought me up
And a Savior who drank life's bitter cup

Largely Who I Am Today

Largely who I am today
Comes of choices I have made
With many days to mark yet still
I have a journey to fulfill

Now I weigh the days long passed
Mine to review, with eyes to cast
To teach me much what I must do
Before life's end of adieu

Knowing there's an end to all this
It is tragedy I want to miss
What awaits on the other side I wonder?
Of those who have journeyed home I ponder...

And feel the press of the other side
Waiting for sealings, mine to find
My responsibility to join my kin
That our chain will lay unbroken

Hoping to be foremost remembered
For having linked my family members
In an empty nest, needing much less sleep
Perhaps it is for endeavor, mine to keep

As more names I uncover
It is myself I discover
I have come of much... I never thought
Their lives touch me and tears I have fought

Largely who I am today
Comes from those who marked the way
My ancestors are a part of me
And I want to do my part, my off'ring

That Click of the Door

That click of the door
As he slips away
Tells me he loves me
As he goes on his way

So as to not disturb
He let's me sleep in
Leaving without a word
My rest still to win

Woke up to the click of the hotel door shutting and I felt bad I had slept through being able to wish him on his way for day two of fireworks shows.  He went to the "yard" to pick up more fireworks.  I stayed in bed and red the scriptures with my NOOK.  That is all we have figured out how to do with it.

Let His Children Walk in Truth

Let His children walk in truth
In gratitude's rebirth
Pressing forward with His word
Holding fast... to endure

Life Was NOT Meant to Be Easy

Life was not meant to be easy
Nor was it to be fair
But to be a time for seeking
And knowing our Father's care

He Died that We Might Live

He died that we might live
His precious life to give
We live that we might know
How precious life's to Him

All of Life's Goodness

All of life's goodness
Heavenly Father offers to share
If we but show meekness
We can feel His arms of tender care

Truths, wisdom, strength, and love...
He reaches us through many means
Through the light of the Son above
He answers our prayers and dreams

Open Up to a New President

Open up to a new president,
Shake the hand he brings,
Those five fingers represent,
A pledge to do five things:

Open up energy, expand trade,
Cut the growth of government,
Educate tomorrows workers to be great,
And restore us to rise as we were meant!

In my heart I understand
The deep and lasting strength
The family holds to help this hand
To bear it up at length

“Here at the NAACP you understand the deep and lasting difference that family makes,” Romney said, adding: “Any policy that lifts up and honors the family is going to be good for the country. As president I will promote strong families, and I will defend traditional marriage.”
In May, the NAACP’s board of directors approved a resolution supporting same-sex marriage.
Romney also said during the speech, “I hope to represent all Americans of every race, creed and sexual orientation, from the poorest to the richest, to everyone in between.”

Why We Forgive - Forgiveness

Forgiving is the beginning
Of being transformed in Jesus Christ
As the wall of hardness is thinning
The Spirit enters with light

This gift of Himself, is a free offering
As we plea for the release of pain
He lifts us to peace from suffering
As we "let go", His love we retain

How great is this joy of forgiveness!
To have sanity, restored
To have the Spirit bear witness
You have been redeemed of the Lord

To feel His love towards all creatures
And accept His payment for sin
To have His countenance on our features
Overcoming the world, through Him

Dare to Stand Alone

May we ever be courageous
And prepared to stand alone
For what can be more generous?
Than sharing that Christ atoned

"May we ever be courageous and prepared to stand for what we believe, and if we must stand alone in the process, may we do so courageously, strengthened by the knowledge that in reality we are never alone when we stand with our Father in Heaven."

I'm a Mormon, Flight Nurse, and Strong Rock in Tragedy

There is someone who takes away the pain
The burden... when a loved one is gone
Knowing they can be with them again
Gives me comfort and courage to go on

Knowing families can be forever
Gives me the courage to fly
Trusting in God through each endeavor
Knowing death's not really good bye

In a Jar that Makes Up My Day

In a jar that makes up my day
Before I add the sands of time
I must put in some rocks to stay
Lest I forget that they are mine

The first is the most important rock
It is personal and family prayer
As with Heavenly Father I talk
And seek His influence and care

The next to enter are hugs and kisses
And they fill the whole bottom up
These are that best life promises
As we are all in need of love

The next is work and it is truly huge
And reaches nearly the top
And beyond that amount, I refuse
For there comes a time that I must stop

The next is a list of things to do
And the heaviest always goes in first
If I don't get to it, I put it in anew
But it may cause tomorrow to burst!

Love is Something

Love is something stronger than powers
It's sweeter than honey and lavender flowers
Love is something that everyone knows
Love is something that always grows

Angels watch over us
As messengers of love
Offering God's promise
His Light from Heaven above

Blessed through adversity
To inspire those about,
I share of who I am, who God is
And of values that really count.

Respect, kindness, inclusion
Loving life, and serving well;
Finding success through vision
And challenging yourself.

A Light on a Hill

A light on a hill
Must not come down low
But shine outward still
The heavens to show

A Call To Prayer

A call to prayer, has been made today
To any and all who will hear
We seek for miracles, to come our way
To restore the freedoms we hold dear...

God's hand inspired the Bill of Rights
Indeed, too, the Constitution
The pursuit of happiness, for us, He lights
Through self-governance... our contribution

There are those who would to change
Those precious rights guaranteed
And destroy morals upon which freedoms hang
Thus we pray, continually, in need

Pressing the gates of heaven
Through mighty fasting and prayer
We will unite on these dates given--
And seek for God's wisdom and care

The Symbol for Christ

What is the symbol, we carry of Jesus?
But His light we hold high on a hill;
There to be seen as it shines outward through us,
As we serve Him, obedient still.

Not in a cross, nor a skyward steeple
A photo, an image, or even a shrine
It is, in deed, in the heart of His people
His living light doth so beautifully shine

The Wind!

Oh the wind plays
And whistles at me.
"Come out," It says
I do, and can't see.

a visual is needed... my hair is always in my eyes in Las Vegas

Barbra Walters: Mormons & Heaven On ABC's "20/20"

Just look into the eyes
Of one good and clean
Speak of Jesus Christ
Why, a light is seen!

The light of love so glows
As to glimpse at heaven
An inner goodness shows
Through faith that flows within

For Mormons, heaven consists of three degrees, with the most dutiful residing in the top level.
“One of the things that distinguishes our belief and our faith is we don’t think you just say, ‘I believe in Jesus,’ and you go straight to heaven,” Walker said. “We think that our lives will be evaluated based on how we lived — we lived with a love for others, if we contribute to society, if we keep the Commandments of God.”

We Believe

We believe in God the Eternal Father,
Who spiritually begot us all
In His Son, Jesus Christ, the Author and Finisher
and in the Holy Ghost, with a voice that's small

Emulate and Honor Parents

As we emulate and honor
Our parents here on Earth
We take on traits of heaven
And unveil our precious worth

You Have Been Planted

Believe you have been planted
Where you will grow the most
To bloom in Christ's light, gifted
With the Holy Ghost

The Enabling Power of the Atonement

The enabling power of the atonement

Beyond the desire or what we thought we could

Oh Moon Can You Fool And Make Me Crazy

Oh moon that looks down on me
Can you fool and make me crazy?
When you're out, do you effect my sleep?
Enough to have nightmares or even count sheep

No, in truth, I think it is your light
Bathing my room, bringing in light
And not your gravitational pull
That makes me weak and feel a fool

Do the crazies come out on a moon lit night?
Perhaps if only because of the extra light
For we all need sleep and should not be out
Till the wee hours, when the mind tricks about

Perhaps this is the day we need to prepare for
And get extra sunshine, a lot, the day before
Melatonin and chemistry keep
Us on a regular pattern of sleep

Teachers, have you ever wondered if your students are wild because of the full moon?  Medics, do you feel like all the crazies come to the ER on a full moon?  Well, for the most part there is no study to prove it.  Could have fooled me.  Well, in Las Vegas it is more like the wind makes us crazy.  Or the kids at least.  And if it rains, watch the energy fly!  Any thoughts on this?

Oh the wind plays
And whistles at me.
"Come out," It says
I do, and can't see.

In Our Mind's Eye

Having a pattern
In our mind's eye
Helps us to gather
All that is wise

Instruction  alone
Is never enough
In faith, light is shown
Thus, we must look up

What Happened?

What happened to the days
You could wag your finger
To state a better way
And a man would stand up bigger

"Yes, Ma'am", he would state
And admit that he was wrong
For he could hardly wait
To prove that he was strong

What happened to the day
When a sign of disapproval
Corrected what was gray
For what's right and for approval

What happened to the days
When a look was all you needed
For someone to change their ways
And mutual respect was greeted

How good it was to find
When you got out of line
A gesture to remind-
With your conscience, realign

What happened to the day
When high morals were on display
And black and white did not fade
And gray was pushed away

I went to a TV preview for an upcoming
show called partners.  I thought how much
TV has changed and revolves around  pushing
the edge... What happened to the day?

Ma'am is a contraction for Madame.

Religious Freedom Defined

Religious freedom is
The human right to express,
Think, and act upon belief
What, from God, may impress

Through faith, prayer, and thought
The path of personal faith is found
As life's answers are sought
Freedom of conscience is sound

This is important to us all
Our founding fathers knew it too
The flag of freedom waves to call
Be free to dream, think, choose, and do

Let there be a moral compass
In the choices that we make
Let us unite for this, thus
And for freedom, re awake

http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/celebrating-freedom-around-the-world
The introduction says that “religious freedom is the human right to think, act upon and express what one deeply believes, according to the dictates of his or her moral conscience. The breadth of religious freedom and its relationship with freedom of conscience helps explain why religious freedom is important for everyone, not just for people of faith.”

The Spirit of Contention

The spirit of contention
Cankers the soul,
Obsesses for attention,
As it takes control.

In the name of freedom
It all but closes doors,
Puts a stop to wisdom,
And combines saboteurs.

Let not opposition
Harden your heart
It's an imposition
Smile and depart

“He that hath the spirit of contention is not of me” (3 Nephi 11:29)

I don't know about you
But it is creepy to see the signs
and hear the comments too
By those with "saving" designs

Doctrinal disputes
Will never come of God
As exchanges abuse
What the other thinks is odd

Agree to disagree
On the narrow path of truth
Celebrate the journey
Let good works be the proof

Always, always pray
To know what path is right
As wisdom comes of faith
Line upon line with light

Facing the Edge

Surfaces make straight faces
That meet at an edge,
They point to each vertex,
Where angles make a wedge

Always be found on top
Choose the face that's grand
Before the edge you must stop
For the earth turns a cruel hand

Geo

Plane figures are flat
they do not take up space
So on a cube I sat
With its shadow before my face

Greatest Common Factor

With two numbers before my face
I wrote the factors of the least
Tried them on the greatest
And found their common beast

Straight

Straight is the way
To the tree of life
Do not look away
Though there will be strife

Press on and partake
Of what is sweet and pure
Through covenants you make
You've grace to endure

Oh

Oh, how it is so grand
To seek and ponder
To try understand
Beyond and yonder

Summer Charm

The pulling of a leg
The twisting of an arm
Tickles that make you beg
Make for summer charm

The Best is Yet to Be

We look back to claim the embers
Of times we felt aglow
Then look forward and remember,
Through faith, the best does show

The best is yet to be!
When pointed to the future
Through lasting embers we
Let experiences tutor

"We look back to claim the embers from glowing experiences but not the ashes. And when we have learned what we need to learn and have brought with us the best that we have experienced, then we look ahead and remember that faith is always pointed toward the future."

Peace is Being in the Moment

Peace is being in the moment
And letting all else go
Thriving on each comment
As from within, words outflow

Weave the Gold

Weave into the gospel
With a fabric of gold
All things are possible
When to covenants you hold

Let it be refined
By the tests you accept
As great heat is applied
You're defined as adept

In the Light of Faith

If worries combine
To hedge up the way
Keep on, you will be fine
In the Light of faith

Am I?

Am I walking today
Where Jesus would have me walk?
Following Him always
Narrowly, upon His rock?

Vow to Be Where

Vow to be where
History is made
And declare there
Faith must never fade

What's the Point

What's the point in having a pencil
If its broken or out of lead?
Get to the point and share the gospel
Remind others of what Jesus said

Set Faith's Anchor to Your Boat

Don't get shipwrecked by laziness
Or capsized by craziness
Seek to keep yourself afloat
Set faith's anchor to your boat

Enter the Rest of the Lord

Enter the rest of the Lord
Flow in the river of peace
Where there is no longer discord
And faith does but increase

Off By Yourself

Off by yourself
Let your life review
Ask the Lord for help
To know what to do

Sometimes we lose who we are
And need to separate
In our souls, travel far
And re-investigate

Off by myself
With my life in review
I asked the Lord's help
To know what to do

I'd nowhere else to turn
All options were gone
Then, from pray I did learn
That I had been wrong

With the Lord's help
I thought a way out
From my own hell
I let go of doubt

Ride the River of Peace

From your fears recoil
Ride the river of peace
That flows amidst turmoil
Let your faith increase

Stay to His Atonement

Stay to His atonement
And pass through all that is asked of you
Each day you own has been lent
Give of yourself in all that you do

Mountains and MoleHills are Relative

They are relative
Mountains and molehills
Are but trials to live
Purposes to fulfill

Don't Push the Atonement Away

Don't push the atonement away
Christ is the Life, The Bread, and The Way
To healing and relief from any strife,
For redemption, peace, and a new life

Why the Bread then the Water?

Why the bread, then the water?
In our prayers to the Father
To take Christ's body, then His blood
And feel His love within us flood

Genealogy

The earth was created
And the family revealed
Then generations waited
To be joined and sealed

We Have Come

We have come to serve you
And show that we care
We don't want to unnerve you
But of our love share

Profound Truth Centers Upon Light

Profound truth
Centers upon light
As for proof
We should choose the right

They Were Waiting for ME

My ancestors beyond the veil
Worked hard on every line
Until upon me... faith did swell
For their sealings beyond time

Upon my shoulders rests
A book of remembrance in need of names
Unseen hands aid my attempts
And to my search fan the flames

Are you like me and know that genealogy rests upon your shoulders?  There needs to be at least one in each family...

The Church Needs You

The Lord's church needs you
Convert to that degree
Where you feel anew
What you were meant to be

Priesthood Blessings

Priesthood blessings edify and energize
Regardless of if they heal
Based on faith in the will of the Lord they apprise
And testify that God is real

In the Back of My Mind

In the back of my mind
Just on the edge
I seek treasure to find
Upon which to pledge

It is always there
Waiting for more
My purpose made bare
What is my life is for?

Looking for a Missionary Poem

Family, and its education,
Is the place where we are known
Structurally as a foundation
It goes with us, where ever we are flown

From its loving supportive face
A missionary plants his feet
To a new found family in place
And the experience is sweet

For they too have sent someone
And there is a void... a longing to know
What it's like...through this service done..
All the many ways you learn, teach, and grow

Oh the joy to serve the Lord
To represent Him and share His gospel
To know His support is poured
Through and for families, made possible

The longing for home
It is always there
For of love and support shown
It is grand to share

Our Father in Heaven knows this
Is what we need the most to learn
That through loving family, we notice
For our eternal home we yearn

Does anyone know of this wonderful poem that Colin is looking for? (read below) I am sure some missionary is carrying it around.  Please let me know so I can forward it to Colin and perhaps post it on my blog to help others....

My name is Colin, I am looking for a missionary poem that I heard years ago and can't find it. It talks about the missionary getting on a plane and leaving family. Then it continues on about his mission, then it talks about him getting on a plane again and leaving his family. If you could help me out with this I would greatly appreciate it.

Regards,

Colin

The Captain of the Soul- Invictus/ The Soul's Captain by Elder Orson F. Whitney

Invictus by William E. Henley
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance,
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

The Soul's Captain [The Answer]
by Elder Orson F. Whitney
of the Quorum of the Twelve
Art thou in truth? Then what of him
Who bought thee with his blood?
Who plunged into devouring seas
And snatched thee from the flood?
Who bore for all our fallen race
What none but him could bear.
The God who died that man might live,
And endless glory share?
Of what avail thy vaunted strength,
Apart from his vast might?
Pray that his Light may pierce the gloom,
That thou mayest see aright.
Men are as bubbles on the wave,
As leaves upon the tree.
Thou, captain of thy soul, forsooth
Who gave that place to thee?
Free will is thine — free agency
To wield for right or wrong;
But thou must answer unto him
To whom all souls belong.
Bend to the dust that head "unbowed,"
Small part of Life's great whole!
And see in him, and him alone,
The Captain of thy soul

He's Been There Before

He's Been There Before by Elder Troy Whittle
The alarm bell rings at 6:30, I stumble to my feet
I grab my companions bedding and pull off his sheets
A groan fills the room, is it already time to arise?
It seems like just a second ago I was able to shut my eyes

The morning activities follow- study, prayer and such
When it's time to leave the apartment, you feel you haven't accomplished much
"We have a super day planned," My comp. says with a grin
I lowly utter a faithless breath, "Yeah, if anyone lets us in."

With the word of God and my faithful Schwinn, we ride off in the street prepared to
Face another day of humidity and heat
It's 9:30 in the evening, the day is almost through
My champion and I are riding home not accomplishing what we thought to do

We ride up to the mailbox, hoping to receive a lot
Only to look inside and hear my echo reverberate "air Box"
We go up to our apartment, the day is now complete
The only thing to show for our work is a case of blistery feet

It's past 10:30 p.m. My companion is fast asleep,
Silence engulfs me all about and I begin to weep
In the midst of sadness, I kneel down to pray
I need to talk to father, but I'm not sure what to say

"Oh, Father" I begin, "What happened to us today?
I thought we'd teach somebody, but everyone was away
My hands, my aching hands- worn, hurt and beat;
If our area was any smaller, we'd have knocked every street"

"Why on missions are the days so much alike?
The only difference about today was the flat tire on my bike
Will you send some cooler weather? The heat is killing me
I sweat so bad, it gets in my eyes, it's very hard to see"

"Why do I have to wear a helmet, isn't your protection enough?
People always laugh at me, and call me stupid stuff
Please send us investigators so I may give them what they lack
I want to give them Books of Mormon, the weight of them hurts my back"

"And what about my family: They don't have much to say
I'm sick of not hearing from home day after day after day
Oh Father, Why am I here am I just wasting time?
Sometimes I just want to go home, I'm sorry but that's on my mind"

"My companion, Heavenly Father, what are you giving me?
"The way he rides his bicycle, I don't think he can see
Now you have it, I can't go on, I don't know what to do
That, my Father in Heaven, is the prayer I have for you"

My prayer now finished, I stand up, then jump right into bed
I need my rest for tomorrow, we have another long day ahead
Sleep start to overtake me, I seem to drift away
Then it seems a vision takes me to another time in another day

I'm standing alone on the hill. The view is very nice
A man walks to wards me and says, "My name is Jesus Christ"
Tears of joy well up inside, I fall down to His feet
"Arise," He states, "Follow me to the shade. You and I need to speak"

My attention's towards my Savior, total and complete
He says, "Your mission is similar of what happened to me
I understand how you feel, I know what you're going through
In fact, it would be fair to say I've felt the same as you"

"I even know how you felt when no one listened to you
At times I felt not quite sure what else I could do
I know you don't like to ride a bicycle, for you a car would be sweet
Just remember the donkey I rode wasn't equipped with 21 speeds"

"I understand you don't like sweating, in fact it's something you hate
I remember when I sweat blood from ev’ry pore, oh the agony was great!
I see you don't like your companion- you'd rather have someone else-
I once had a companion named Judas who sold my life for wealth"

"It's hard to wear a helmet and have people make fun of you
I remember when they put thorns on my head and called me King of the Jews
So you feel burdened down by the weight of your pack
I recall how heavy the cross was when they slammed it on my back"

"Your hands hurt from tracting and knocking on doors all day
I guess when they pounded nails into mine, I ached in a similar way
It's hard not to hear from home when your family's not there to see
I lost communication on the cross and cried, "Father, why hast Thou forsaken me?"

"We have a lot in common, but there's a difference between us you see
I endured to the end and finished my mission, so follow and do like me"
He embraced me with His arms and His light filled me with His love
With tears in my eyes I watched as He went back to the Father above

I stood with awe and wonder when a beep rang in my head
I listened and heard the alarm, then realized I was in my bed
My companion let out a groan, "6:30 already, no way!"
I sat up and said, "Come on, I'll even carry your scriptures today!"

No matter what we go through, when we feel we can't take more
Just stop and think about Jesus Christ, He's been there before

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

These poems are my own thoughts and impressions as I study the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints

I encourage you to read from the Book of Mormon and the standard works, and listen to modern day prophets, also, that your mind and heart might be touched.
