That bit of filth
Is like dirt
It builds and films
Where you're hurt
In a rut
It gets in
There's no but-
Disease begins
In a crack
It does grove
To attack
On the move
In a sore
It does play
To infect and gore
Hardening away
For inside us
It's a germ
There to pus
Boil and squirm
So just like soap
Makes us clean
The Lord's our hope
On whom we lean
He protects us well
And bears the dirt
That sins don't dwell
Nor divert
That bit of dirt
Cannot hurt
I say at first
Till... the tears burst

We Meet Together Oft
We meet together oft
To partake of bread and wine
In remembrance soft
Of the Savior- yours and mine
We witness all anew
Of the blessed name we bear
While repenting too
Always for His Spirit there
Let us eat of the bread
In remembrance of the Son
And sip of that shed
For our ransom fully won
D&C 20:75–79
75 It is expedient that the church meet together often to partake of bread and wine in the remembrance of the Lord Jesus;
76 And the elder or priest shall administer it; and after this manner shall he administer it—he shall kneel with the church and call upon the Father in solemn prayer, saying:
77 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it, that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him and keep his commandments which he has given them; that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.
78 The manner of administering the wine—he shall take the cup also, and say:
79 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this wine to the souls of all those who drink of it, that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of thy Son, which was shed for them; that they may witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they do always remember him, that they may have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.

Come and Remove Each Spot
Come and remove each spot
That stained your soul this week
Come confessing your lot
As one humbly meek
Come give thanks with good cheer
That your joy might be full
Come feel the Spirit near
Of Him who is merciful
D&C 59:9
9 And that thou mayest more fully keep thyself unspotted from the world, thou shalt go to the house of prayer and offer up thy sacraments upon my holy day;

The Gates of Hell Lie Open
The gates of hell ever lie open
Ready to greedily receive
All who partake not of their token
And are speedily then deceived
For they'd not come to repent
To partake anew and be filled
Forgetting each sweet covenant
With commandments left unfulfilled
Their share of the bread was left wasted
The freely given gift denied
The cleansing drink was not tasted
Thus, they spiritually slept and died
3 Ne. 18:6–11
6 And this shall ye always observe to ado, even as I have done, even as I have broken bread and blessed it and given it unto you.
7 And this shall ye do in remembrance of my body, which I have shown unto you. And it shall be a testimony unto the Father that ye do always remember me. And if ye do always remember me ye shall have my Spirit to be with you.
8 And it came to pass that when he said these words, he commanded his Disciples that they should take of the wine of the cup and drink of it, and that they should also give unto the multitude that they might drink of it.
9 And it came to pass that they did so, and did drink of it and were filled; and they gave unto the multitude, and they did drink, and they were filled.
10 And when the Disciples had done this, Jesus said unto them: Blessed are ye for this thing which ye have done, for this is fulfilling my commandments, and this doth witness unto the Father that ye are willing to do that which I have commanded you.
11 And this shall ye always do to those who repent and are baptized in my name; and ye shall do it in remembrance of my blood, which I have shed for you, that ye may witness unto the Father that ye do always remember me. And if ye do always remember me ye shall have my Spirit to be with you.

He Took the Bread and then Gave Thanks
He took the bread and then gave thanks
He broke it and offered saying-
This is my body given for you
This do in remembrance praying
Like wise the cup was filled also
To represent His blood to pour
There to teach us that we might know
Who His blessed life was shed for
Luke 22:19–20
19 ¶ And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

The Invitation to Repent
The invitation to repent
Is rarely for chastisement
But a plea to turn a life around
Where open loving arms are found
Imagine the Lord's merciful embrace
Warmly encircling, holy, and safe
His loving arms ever out stretched and open
Offering a higher way of life to hope in
Those living riotously can change and begin
To be spiritually wrapped in forgiveness within
No matter how selfish, how forsaken the sin
Our Savior is eager that we be forgiven
Who'd not run against the wind and even swim upstream
To come unto Christ where the gospel fruit is then seen
Thus, He who humbly submits and asks for the Father's will
Can know, feel, and find a peace that's sweetly still
Since repentance is a journey, not a one-time event
We petition daily and weekly partake of the sacrament
There to check on our progress as though on a mountain peak
Where we can see life more clearly through the spirit that we seek
Oft still to the repentant, Godly sorrow remains
To remind us never again to do what truly pains
Ever as we're laboring against the devil's tightening bands
We can find Him who has graven us in the palms of His hands
Repentance always means brighter days lie ahead
Midst a residue of past mistakes filtering in our head
Forsaking our sins requires restoration and time
Unto the healing peace of conscience as the anguish subsides
Let us take counsel and in good works be about
Putting off the natural man who would that we doubt
Let us be unselfish, honest, and more pure
Being patient and kind that our spirituality endure
Let us ever hear the bidding of our Lord calling our name
And pray that each in our family will in deed do the same
Ever we may know our Savior infinitely understands
And reaches out to us offering His sure healing hands
Repent... That I May Heal You
Elder Neil L. Andersen
November Ensign, 2009, 40
His Loving Kindness
His loving kindness
His matchless power
His open invitation
To heal us in that hour
Real joy awaits each of us
On the other side of sorrow
Ever He calls with mercy just
Why would we wait until tomorrow?
Amidst disease and death
That embraces all mankind
He that grants living breath
Is the Master Healer we can find
As our advocate
With Heavenly Father
Let us not forget
His freely given offer
"Come unto me," is the endless call
Of Him who is just and merciful
He the Redeemer from the fall
Grants the greatest of all miracles
A divine healing of the spirit
Comes as we repent and return
Back to the Lord- to hear Him
And feel reborn to re discern
For He heals the repentant soul
Afflicted in any manner
Let us re assume our known role
And say "Yeah, Lord" as our answer
As one healed might we go
And speak of what we've seen and heard
There to witness of all we know
That others might pursue His grand Word
The magnitude of His healing
Can take away all our sins
Thus a debt to Him we are feeling
Midst tears of gratitude for that cleanse
Thanks to the Lord- we have hope
Of brighter days ahead
What greater joy can one know
Than of being spiritually led

Our missionary soon will be home
After being gone for so long.
Won't you come and welcome him
And be a part of the throng?
Come and hear of all he did
Enjoy the pictures vastly taken
Come to be spiritually fed
While tasting the foods that he'd eaten
I wrote this for the Thorntons
whose son is coming home soon...

The Light of Belief Lies Within You
The light of belief lies within you
The warmth of its awakening burns
It is set ablaze by the holiness of God
As the added witness of the Spirit confirms
That as belief in God is being questioned
Midst the secular darkness all around
Our concern is for the path of progression
As we seek to be eternally bound
Without God, life would end at the grave
As also all we've accomplished
But, we know the plan that our Father has made
And His light will not be extinguished
We have been formed to see, think, and feel
After His own image and His own likeness
That we may know Him, though there be a veil
Led on by our prophet's sure witness
All who desire to feel of His presence
Must submit humbly and pray
Kneeling to seek for the Spirit's influence
Felt while reading what the scriptures say
As all the prophets in their dispensations
Have seen what defies all description
Building a righteous covenant nation
And our own time is not an exception...
He who was appointed for this Latter- day
Sought His Father to know what is true
He retired to a grove to ponder and pray
As prophets of old had done too
He beheld there in full brightness and glory
The Father as well as the Son
Joining with those out of ancient history
Who were taught how God's work is won
That by the power of the Holy Ghost
And the priesthood there's to bear
We can receive what we need the most
As they testify and declare
Know the Spirit can be constrained
Thus be careful and be taught
For when faithfulness and hope have waned
The natural man is our lot
Know, too, those who disbelieve
Desire to ridicule and falsely teach
Never content they must strive to deceive
And seek for those whom they might reach
Thus we must yield to the Lord, ever meek
And be as a child full of love
To please our Father, let us ever seek
That we might return to Him above
Let us now ponder His heavenly glory
With softened hearts, let us be touched
That we might be taught by the Spirit this story:
Our Dear Heavenly Father loves us so much!
Seeking to Know God, Our Heavenly Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ

Here Is Wisdom and It Remaineth in Me
"Light Echo" Illuminates Dust Around Supergiant Star V838 Monocerotis (V838 Mon). Credit: NASA and The Hubble Heritage Team (AURA/STScI).
Here is wisdom and it remaineth in me
For eternal life and immortality
I, the supreme ruler and creator, do send
My works, powers, and words ever without end
All the heavens and firmaments speak well of me
As I caused lights to appear for life to be
That amidst each yielding fruit after its kind
My glory is present for the seeker to find
Moses 1,2
I wrote this poem and then read the article about the Washington DC visitor center....
A particular scripture inspired Bro. Woodhead throughout the process of creating the ‘Heavenly Majesty’ exhibit: “The earth rolls upon her wings, and the sun giveth his light by day, and the moon giveth her light by night, and the stars also give their light, as they roll upon their wings in their glory, in the midst of the power of God…. Behold, all these are kingdoms, and any man who hath seen any or the least of these hath seen God moving in his majesty and power” (D&C 88: 45, 47). The committee’s hope in creating this exhibit was that children and youth who came would be inspired to study science, and that all would find their testimonies strengthened. From the reactions observed by Elder and Sister Rich and the sister missionaries, it would seem they have succeeded.

The Gates of Hell Will Not Prevail
The gates of hell will not prevail
We've built upon the rock
Let the floods come and winds beat down
On good paths we now walk
In truth the Spirit bears record
With visits and with fire
As we receive the Father's Word
Baptized for what inspires
Let our good works be written
As we repent and do
Lest we fall and are smitten
Let's come, vow, and renew
In love, let us each oft partake
Receiving all He gives
For of our lives there's good He makes
To firmly know He lives!

Wilford Woodruff
He labored with his hands
As well as his head
This man of the land
Spiritually led
He dug, planted, and pruned
Gathered and hauled around the farm
Here his soul was fine tuned
And preserved from what would harm
What faith filled path did he not take?
His skills so various
What bones did he not break
While being industrious

Upon the Mount of Olives' Floor
Upon the darkened garden floor
Our Savior knelt to pray
To spare the sins of all mankind
In God's appointed way
He would that He not drink the cup
The burden felt in full
He suffered and He drank it up
Midst sweat that bled to pool
We know the name by which we're called
And witness all anew
There is but one Lord- Jesus Christ
His works we strive to do
With faith, we've hope and charity
We speak with soberness
And feel His love with reverence,
Warmed by His tenderness
D&C 18:
19 And if you have not faith, hope, and charity, you can do nothing.
21 Take upon you the name of Christ, and speak the truth in soberness.
Tune from Upon the Cross of Calvary
Hymn 184
luke 22:44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
A sweet and oft prayed for experience
to have words of the sacrament come
for a hymn
I started to write with the tune in still
going in my mind- I wrote the first line
then said a prayer and opened my scriptures
and wrote the third verse...
and was thinking.. and Rick picked up
what I wrote and knew that it was to
the tune and wrote the second half
of the first verse
what a sweet experience to write
with Rick- the true poet in the
family.

I Would Choose to Die
I would choose to die
Rather than deny
The blessed things I know
That in me ebb and flow
I have waves of truth
That come to me as proof
When a question is given
Answers are sent from heaven
What dwells inside of me
Is light for all to see
There to share that others might
Pray also to know what's right
If this light went dim
There'd be naught within
For it's become such a part of me
I'd cease to exist to be
It floods into my heart
With feelings that impart
Love and mercy too
Which wash me all anew
While pondering and thinking of the martyrdom of Joseph Smith ...

The Gates of Hell
The gates of hell
Can not prevail
If we believe
What we receive
The more we know,
We discern, and grow
Unto strength to heed
And in turn lead

as if from mine own mouth,
in all patience and faith
For by doing these things
the gates of hell
shall not prevail

It is Ours
It is ours to administer
Programs and ordinances
Too, it is ours to minister
Those in trying circumstances
The sick, the weary, the cold
Are some of the many who cry out
Let us restore them to the fold
Unto the programs we're about
Let us emulate the good shepherd
Who left the ninety nine
To find those lost from the heard
And are having a hard time

No Father Would Send His Children Off to a Distant Dangerous Land
No father would send his children
Off to a distant dangerous land
Without at first providing them
With some means of protection at hand
Our Heavenly Father has given us
A personal source of protection
A blessed lifeline we can trust
That lights intellect and introspection
As His children we are not left alone
For the things of the spirit are ours to find
His great plan for us is made known
Through what comes to the heart and mind
Unto the seeker as a wondrous gift
That is received through ordinance
The Holy Ghost helps us to choose and sift
While providing comfort and assistance
That by listening to the promptings
Our lives are led and even be saved
That whenever we are struggling
A channel unto God is well paved
May we keep it clean from clutter
That miracles might come faith
But, if not, He still hears each utter
That as we use a delete key there’s a new way
When unworthy thoughts enter the mind
Inspired music can dispel what stations
As through hymns prayerfully sung we find
Therein is power to escape temptation
In every pursuit and task
We can avoid wayward turning
For as we pray to God and ask…
We will feel our bosom burning

We Sent Her Ashes to the Wind
We flew and spread her ashes to the wind
While circling a mountain to ascend
Symbolically with grandpa she was freed
A thirty three year desire finally achieved
I had him baptized 24 years ago
And my desire for her now does grow
That through time and space they'll be together
To enjoy the blessings that extend forever
How thankful I am for Jesus Christ
That he atoned for us and paid the price
That each man will be given the opportunity
To enjoy gospel covenants in love and unity
How thankful I am for our Eternal Father
To have created a plan that we might gather
There to enjoy increase in every way
If we just come to him, covenant, and obey

Where We are Not Allowed to Share
The Church Continues to Grow
The church continues to grow
And change our lives more and more

Baptism for the Dead
In the Spirit world beyond
Our eternal life continues
And for those who've traveled on
Baptism changes venues
On earth we're given temples
To labor for our dead
As proxy for our people
While by the spirit led
Through our works on their behalf
Bondage and darkness falls away
Light comes they are free to act
And enter the narrow way

Welcome to Conference October 2009
President Thomas S. Monson
Millions of ordinances are performed in the temples each year in behalf of our deceased loved ones. May we continue to be faithful in performing such ordinances for those who are unable to do so for themselves. I love the words of President Joseph F. Smith as he spoke of temple service and of the spirit world beyond mortality. Said he, “Through our efforts in their behalf their chains of bondage will fall from them, and the darkness surrounding them will clear away, that light may shine upon them and they shall hear in the spirit world of the work that has been done for them by their [people] here, and will rejoice with you in your performance of these duties.”1 -Joseph F. Smith, in Conference Report, Oct. 1916, 6.

What Do Latter Day Saint Women Do Best?
What do Latter Day Saint women do best?
But stand strong and immovable
As a united society, I'm convinced
Their strength will one day be incalculable
It's become increasingly my belief
That the sisters will learn to speak as one
In faith, family, and relief
Set apart as disciples of the Son
In this difficult season of history
There has never been more need
To offer hope and alleviate misery
May the sisters combine and lead
Let them be immovable in their covenants
There to uphold, nourish, and protect the home
While defending truth in all they come up against
As, too, they make their divine roles known
Let them get on their knees and plea with the Lord
For help and strength and direction in all things
There to ask "who needs our help?" and relief effort
While preparing for the Lord midst what calamity brings
Let them gather under the banner of Relief Society
And help every sister become self-reliant
Too, prepared to face worldly storms and anxiety
From the addicted, unfaithful, and disobedient
Let every conference, activity, and meeting
Help the sisters do what they should do best
There to unite and move forward completing
What, through faith in the Savior, does succor and bless
What Latter-Day Saint Women Do Best: Stand strong and Immovable

Ensign, November 2007, 109
A Golden Strand Through Time
A golden strand through time
Connects the old to the new
Through generations we find
Strength to go and do
Let us not forget the past
Our grandparents have been taught
They have learned what lasts
And we gain much from their thoughts
For with the ancient is wisdom
And solidarity too
That when families would abandon some
This is not what grandparents do
They're each a priceless resource
To reach and teach our youth
For they've walked the paths of remorse
And known correction and reproof
Their traits have become quite steady
And they can soften most family strife
For their soft side is always ready
To see the strengths in each one's life
Those aged are on the brink
Of passing through the veil
They're our most certain link
To what we need without fail
What can a grandparent do
When old, feeble and inactive?
But be the warmth children run to
For the strength to believe and live
The Golden Years
President Boyd K. Packer
Value the old folks
for what they are
not just what they can do
Ours is a Work of Salvation
Ours is a work of salvation
Filled with service and dedication
That we might become a holy people
Inspired to do all that is needful...
The purpose of Relief Society has been defined
That each sister might become eternally entwined
There to know increased faith and righteousness
To serve their homes and the Lord with all they possess
And as no other woman's society has had such a birth
Each are set apart to do a great work upon the earth
Having been organized as part of the restoration
We council to seek, receive, and act on revelation
Then in partnership with priesthood leadership
We do a faith-based work each within their stewardship
That each may be magnified and sanctified to administer
With added vigor, meaning, and joy as brothers and sisters
And as we've inspired correlated lessons to teach
Let the essential greetings and business be brief
That each can receive doctrine from apostles and prophets
There to be edified and educated how we will best profit
As sisters, we plan by asking the Lord what He'd have us do
And council with the Bishop who knows of special needs too...
From strengthening each sister to preparing for emergencies
When it's inspired of God, let no man count them as small things
But, know also, much that we do doesn't happen in meetings
For we're invited to follow the example of Christ's teachings
There to minister in His behalf and be His helping hands
That of those we visit- we love, know, serve, and understand
This being the greatest evidence of our discipleship
We focus on the person in a sacred time of fellowship
Here to demonstrate faith and to teach in inspired ways
Being led by the spirit to know what to do and say
And as from a visit temporal needs are oft made known
Welfare and compassionate service are a Relief Society outgrowth
May each sister never suppress a generous thought
And be the Lord's heart and hands doing as we ought
For as each sister does her part that God's works might fulfill
Angels are her associates unto witnessed miracles
May we celebrate and give thanks for this work we've been given
Rejoicing that we've the gospel and the best days to live in
Ever... as a beautiful gathering of Relief Society women

I Know God's Love is Real
I know God's love is real
A precious gift to feel
It is as warm as a touch
I can hold close and trust
Granting mercy and grace
That's as tender as an embrace
When I'm still, to my mind, He shows
Light and wisdom that fills and flows
How can I share and express
What the Spirit can impress
Save, what I know can come to you
By the Spirit and humility too
A precious gift to feel
It is as warm as a touch

Now You Can Walk the New Way
Now you can walk the new way
With a mighty change of heart
Through this token of your faith
Your life with a precious gift will start
And as the Holy Ghost teaches
Let your spirit be found contrite
That as it inward reaches
It will touch what gives you light
Heavenly Father has a plan
Of which we're each a part
We must do all that we can
To be proven and stalwart
With a mighty change of heart
Through this token of your faith
Your life with a precious gift will start

The Brethren Gather As One
The brethren gather as one
To invoke a priesthood blessing
Having been commissioned of the Son
They've words of the Father for expressing
In a circle that's unbroken
Each puts a hand in place
And as the prayer is spoken
There's a unifying embrace
How tender is each word
As it's been sent from above
And with all that is heard
There's a stillness of warmth and love
invoke -verb: request earnestly (something from somebody); ask for aid or protection

Authorize the Spirit to Teach You
Whether through thoughts or feelings, I am not sure
But, I received words from God ever so pure
For I asked in prayer if all were from Him...
Now, in this manner, I receive them often
And, each time I do, I ask, "Is there more?"
That as living water, a stream might pour
There to ask again if each word is right
And truly given with clarity and light
What has happened to me, can happen to you
As you reflect, pray, and ponder anew
While searching God's doctrine written for us
And desiring to know, do, and be given to trust
Yet, who am I that I should receive?
But a child of God, who says, "Yeah, I believe"
That when I seek to understand His written word
To my mind and heart, then, much is heard
Richard G. Scott
thoughts from conference on receiving personal
spiritual guidance- solicited or not and how
impressions should be acted on to receive more...
He also said that strong emotions can mask this
influence- anger, hate, passion, fear, or pride
he said it was like trying to savor the delicate
flavor of a grape while eating a jalapeno pepper.

Mormon Times
Hope Has the Power to Fill our Lives
Hope has the power to fill our lives
Increasingly with joy and happiness
For we, as though toddlers, can learn to strive
Step after step to cultivate this
That, through trial, we can become steadfast
Growing in ability to abound in hope
Then, sustained, we know despair cannot last
For we’ve the Holy Spirit that helps us to probe
And as we learn to walk more perfectly
We’ve manifestations through a widened scope
That through prayer we receive directly
Light to pierce any darkness unto new hope
Now- ever do I offer what I have thus learned
To those who would surrender to that which is stark
Ever will I say with love and the deepest concern
Come unto Christ’s path where hope gladdens the heart
For, because of His life and great sacrifice
We have brightness of hope and can be assured
That in the final chapter of our book of life
There’ll be the richest moment ever treasured
Who does soften sorrow
Unto hope on the morrow
Ever it is our Jesus
Whom we’re in need of…

Give Peace Another Chance
Let us give peace another chance
May we start with eye contact?
Each did their best in the circumstance
As in truth is was the spirit we lacked
Before one adds fuel to the fire
Let us light a candle, there to talk
Each speaking softly lest the flame expire
That its burning may serve as our clock
One inch, two inches, three
Till we've have rehashed all the old
Till we can talk again of we
And let the wax be all that's cold
May we start with eye contact?
Each did their best in the circumstance
As in truth is was the spirit we lacked
Before one adds fuel to the fire
Let us light a candle, there to talk
Each speaking softly lest the flame expire
That its burning may serve as our clock

Come Unto Me
Come unto me all ye who labor
And I will give you rest
Take my yoke upon you
Learn of me... and trust
Wherever you live
Whatever your trial
The Savior does give
To those... without guile
Where I dwellest "Come and see"
Said the Master to the crowd
He invited "... follow me"...
And find rest as one not proud
His yoke is easy
His burden is light
To serve is pleasing
When your heart is right
Though the winds of despair may rise
And the swelling waves remain
Keep the Lord fixed before your eyes
To triumph and attain...
Do not hesitate on His narrow path
For His steps never halt toward us
We have many trials and temptations to pass
Trust His goodness and mercy is just
1 Thessalonians
2:3 For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in
guile: 2:4 But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the
gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth
our hearts.
Matthew 11:28, 30
28 ¶ Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Come unto Me
Ensign, Apr 1998, 16
Adapted from a Church Educational System Young Adult fireside given on 2 March 1997 at Brigham Young University
Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. This is his true and living Church. He wishes us to come unto him, to follow him, to be comforted by him. Then he wishes us to give comfort to others. However halting our steps are toward him—though they shouldn’t be halting at all—his steps are never halting toward us. May we have enough faith to accept the goodness of God and the mercy of his Only Begotten Son. May we come unto him and his gospel and be healed. And may we do more to heal others in the process. When the storms of life make this difficult, may we still follow his bidding to “come,” keeping our eye fixed on him forever and single to his glory. In doing so we too will walk triumphantly over the swelling waves of life’s difficulties and remain unterrified amid any rising winds of despair.
Walk in the Newness of Life

About Me
The Captain of the Soul- Invictus/ The Soul's Captain by Elder Orson F. Whitney
Invictus by William E. Henley
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance,
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
The Soul's Captain [The Answer]
by Elder Orson F. Whitney
of the Quorum of the Twelve
Art thou in truth? Then what of him
Who bought thee with his blood?
Who plunged into devouring seas
And snatched thee from the flood?
Who bore for all our fallen race
What none but him could bear.
The God who died that man might live,
And endless glory share?
Of what avail thy vaunted strength,
Apart from his vast might?
Pray that his Light may pierce the gloom,
That thou mayest see aright.
Men are as bubbles on the wave,
As leaves upon the tree.
Thou, captain of thy soul, forsooth
Who gave that place to thee?
Free will is thine — free agency
To wield for right or wrong;
But thou must answer unto him
To whom all souls belong.
Bend to the dust that head "unbowed,"
Small part of Life's great whole!
And see in him, and him alone,
The Captain of thy soul
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

He's Been There Before
He's Been There Before by Elder Troy Whittle
The alarm bell rings at 6:30, I stumble to my feet
I grab my companions bedding and pull off his sheets
A groan fills the room, is it already time to arise?
It seems like just a second ago I was able to shut my eyes
The morning activities follow- study, prayer and such
When it's time to leave the apartment, you feel you haven't accomplished much
"We have a super day planned," My comp. says with a grin
I lowly utter a faithless breath, "Yeah, if anyone lets us in."
With the word of God and my faithful Schwinn, we ride off in the street prepared to
Face another day of humidity and heat
It's 9:30 in the evening, the day is almost through
My champion and I are riding home not accomplishing what we thought to do
We ride up to the mailbox, hoping to receive a lot
Only to look inside and hear my echo reverberate "air Box"
We go up to our apartment, the day is now complete
The only thing to show for our work is a case of blistery feet
It's past 10:30 p.m. My companion is fast asleep,
Silence engulfs me all about and I begin to weep
In the midst of sadness, I kneel down to pray
I need to talk to father, but I'm not sure what to say
"Oh, Father" I begin, "What happened to us today?
I thought we'd teach somebody, but everyone was away
My hands, my aching hands- worn, hurt and beat;
If our area was any smaller, we'd have knocked every street"
"Why on missions are the days so much alike?
The only difference about today was the flat tire on my bike
Will you send some cooler weather? The heat is killing me
I sweat so bad, it gets in my eyes, it's very hard to see"
"Why do I have to wear a helmet, isn't your protection enough?
People always laugh at me, and call me stupid stuff
Please send us investigators so I may give them what they lack
I want to give them Books of Mormon, the weight of them hurts my back"
"And what about my family: They don't have much to say
I'm sick of not hearing from home day after day after day
Oh Father, Why am I here am I just wasting time?
Sometimes I just want to go home, I'm sorry but that's on my mind"
"My companion, Heavenly Father, what are you giving me?
"The way he rides his bicycle, I don't think he can see
Now you have it, I can't go on, I don't know what to do
That, my Father in Heaven, is the prayer I have for you"
My prayer now finished, I stand up, then jump right into bed
I need my rest for tomorrow, we have another long day ahead
Sleep start to overtake me, I seem to drift away
Then it seems a vision takes me to another time in another day
I'm standing alone on the hill. The view is very nice
A man walks to wards me and says, "My name is Jesus Christ"
Tears of joy well up inside, I fall down to His feet
"Arise," He states, "Follow me to the shade. You and I need to speak"
My attention's towards my Savior, total and complete
He says, "Your mission is similar of what happened to me
I understand how you feel, I know what you're going through
In fact, it would be fair to say I've felt the same as you"
"I even know how you felt when no one listened to you
At times I felt not quite sure what else I could do
I know you don't like to ride a bicycle, for you a car would be sweet
Just remember the donkey I rode wasn't equipped with 21 speeds"
"I understand you don't like sweating, in fact it's something you hate
I remember when I sweat blood from ev’ry pore, oh the agony was great!
I see you don't like your companion- you'd rather have someone else-
I once had a companion named Judas who sold my life for wealth"
"It's hard to wear a helmet and have people make fun of you
I remember when they put thorns on my head and called me King of the Jews
So you feel burdened down by the weight of your pack
I recall how heavy the cross was when they slammed it on my back"
"Your hands hurt from tracting and knocking on doors all day
I guess when they pounded nails into mine, I ached in a similar way
It's hard not to hear from home when your family's not there to see
I lost communication on the cross and cried, "Father, why hast Thou forsaken me?"
"We have a lot in common, but there's a difference between us you see
I endured to the end and finished my mission, so follow and do like me"
He embraced me with His arms and His light filled me with His love
With tears in my eyes I watched as He went back to the Father above
I stood with awe and wonder when a beep rang in my head
I listened and heard the alarm, then realized I was in my bed
My companion let out a groan, "6:30 already, no way!"
I sat up and said, "Come on, I'll even carry your scriptures today!"
No matter what we go through, when we feel we can't take more
Just stop and think about Jesus Christ, He's been there before
