May the Peace of God Rest Upon You

May the peace of God rest upon you
Your houses and your lands
According to your diligence
In doing all that the Lord commands

Alma 7:27 And now, may the Peace of God rest upon you, and upon your houses and lands, and upon your flocks and herds, and all that you possess, your women and your children, according to your faith and good works, from this time forth and forever. And thus I have spoken. Amen.

The Course of the Lord

The course of the Lord
Is one eternal round
His mysteries unfold
As to Him we are found

1 Nephi 10:19
For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost, as well in these times as in times of old, and as well in times of old as in times to come; wherefore, the course of the Lord is one eternal round.

Can We Love One Another?

Can we love one another,
Obeying Christ's command
...If we judge each other
And seek not to understand

What is Service?

What is service?
But selfless labor
For a higher purpose
The promise of more

Service is seeing
Another's need unmet
With one's love not fleeing
But tendered instead

The Gospel is Like a Puzzle

The gospel is like a puzzle
All the pieces are already there
It is through patient struggle
That discoveries are made to share

Flip-Flopping in Bed

Flip-flopping in bed
Trapped in deepening thought
Much circled in my head
With worries that I fought

My stomach took to burning
I began to feel heart sick
With anxiety turning
Dark, consuming, and thick

Some things can't be ignored
As life demands of us
Thankfully, the Lord
Is a strength whom all can trust

What's bothersome today
Is but a passing of time
When we've faith enough to pray
In the end, things work out fine

I found this- I had written a month or so ago. Worrying about selling the house.
I guess I am getting used to having an empty house in Ca- It has been for sale for months. I have been blessed though with a raise and my paycheck nearly covers the mortgage payment. I just know I don't want to be a renter again. And we only did it for one year.

The Seeds of Alienation

The seeds of alienation
In a marriage once so sweet
Came through the education
Of traps set to mind sweep

Through the click of a mouse
The adversary leaks coverage
For temptations to douse
With lust as the leverage

At the root of this evil
Is an attempt to destroy
Roles given male and female
That can be holy to enjoy

With open hands and hearts
Love reaches out and up
But when the opposite starts
Self-indulgence makes rough

Like thieves in the night
Lust is a cesspool of perceptions
Clandestine to ignite
If one succumbs to its deceptions

Run- fast to get away
Give no place for this sin
Continually for mercy- pray
With God, it's a battle you can win

Filter out all that does pull
Seek help and watch your step
The spirit can be made dull
If your covenants are not kept

Ask for a priesthood blessing
Plea for angels while you pray
Picture your loved ones- this I'm stressing
As their images oft save the day

Fill your home with all that's good
With art, music, and literature
And know God's laws are best understood
When you keep yourself lit, clean, and pure

Remember the temple arms you with power
As there are symbols you take home with you
That glory might be about to shower
Angels among your midst too

Ever think of Christ
Who has born every grief
Who has carried our sorrows
And can heal us as Light greets

Every time that we transgress
We hurt not only those we love
But Him who so dearly loves us
And saves us for heaven above

Give no place for the enemy
Who would to destroy your soul
Be pure as we were meant to be
And let fidelity be your goal

Place No More for the Enemy of My Soul

The Constitution Should Not be Misconstrued

The Constitution should not be used
As a weapon to end debate
Especially when proposals abuse
The guarantees given to each state

For who is closer to the people
Who've sovereignty to embrace
Than the local government, pure and simple
Righting the issues that they face

And above all, may religious freedom reign
To promote righteousness and civic virtue
That faith in America not wain
For the good that it can do

Let us each express gratitude
To God for life and liberty
Then lest our laws be misconstrued
Let us work to balance them properly

Turning to the Lord for Healing

More and more, we as a people
Are turning to the Lord
For stress can make us feeble
In ways we can't ignore

To be healthy today
There is much that we must do
With physical laws to obey
Oft the remedy's but there too

Moreover, we pray for each other
As this opens doors indeed
Awakening to one another
That a child of God is in need

Then, if what ails persists
Those with priesthood can be sent
That God's power might manifest
Through His love more evident

Trusting in the Lord, more
We work to accept His will
For He knows what is in store
And some He calls home still

Elder Dallin H. Oaks

Covenanting We Pass

Covenanting we pass
The bread of Jesus Christ
As to Him we cast
Our sins...for a new life

Promising we hold
His living water cup
And before us we behold
His image upon us

Thus as new creatures
We walk along His path
We read His holy scriptures
And do the things He asks

We follow as He leads
Us along the narrow way
We trust He knows our needs
As through Him to God we pray

Our Father, God above
Sent His Son to atone
On a mission of love
His work to do alone-
To bring us safely home

Believe, Pray, Repent

Believe, pray, repent
Have faith, ponder, search
Be consistent
And attend church

Reducing the Disparity

Reducing the disparity
Between words and deeds
Takes work and charity
While recognizing needs

The Lord Will NOT Open Doors We're Unprepared to Enter

The Lord will not open doors
We're unprepared to enter
We must search vast corridors
For that door straight and center

May the Piece of the Lord Be Upon You

May the piece of the Lord be upon you
Settling warm upon your soul
Guiding you as a light, too
Helping you define your role

Trying to Get My Attention

Trying to get my attention
My mistakes keep coming back

Heavenly Father- I Surrender!

Heavenly Father, I surrender
I need saving from myself!
I'm in need of the Savior
As my poor choices ever swell

Help me bring forth works which are meet
For repentance of my sins
That I might lay them at His feet
As well as my burdens

Help me be separate
From all that is unclean
Following the voice of the shepherd
By helping those most in need

I Want to Be an Example

I want to be an example
And let His Light shine forth
That another might then sample
What God's love prepares us for

You Are Loved (Don't Give Up) - Debbie West Coon & Justin Williams

When I would to give up
What shall I do?
But with the Lord sup
And be strengthened anew

Captured Miracles Collection and My Name Is HOPE

What can I offer
A friend in sorrow?
But, the arms of the Savior
And hope for tomorrow

Words Alone Cannot Convey

Words alone cannot convey
What I'm feeling in my heart
So overcome with love today
Born of Spirit that imparts

Whispering truths, that help me learn,
Teaching me things which I should do
While piercing my soul that my heart burns
As I feast on Christ's words anew

I strive to understand
What is being taught that I might grow
As, never with a tumultuous hand
Will living waters instantly flow

The Voice of the Spirit

"The voice of the Spirit is described in the scriptures as being neither loud nor harsh, not a voice of thunder, neither a voice of great tumultuous noise, but rather as still and small, of perfect mildness, as if it had been a whisper, and it can pierce even the very soul and cause the heart to burn. The Spirit does not get our attention by shouting."

He is The Way

He is The Way
To follow
He is The Truth
To borrow
He is The Life
If... we allow

Be not afraid
He says to us all
Believe. Have faith
He ever does call
Offering up peace
When... we would to fall

When I am lonely
I know He is there
I trust that He knows me
I feel His kind care
My faith is growing
With love, this I share

Some Days I Fear I Can't Breathe

Some days I fear I can't breathe
So smothered in daily life
And there's naught to offer relief
But my Savior Jesus Christ

He quiets my mind
With Light to behold
His peace sure to find
I'm one of His fold

It is as though
Fresh air has been sent
As in me does flow
Breath that's been lent

Then richly blessed
What should I do?
Life is a test
I press on anew

When I Have Been Hurt

When I have been hurt and I feel sad
My first reaction is to get mad
These angry feelings are but an alarm
That what I am thinking is causing me harm

Heavenly Father has taught a different way
And it is to Him that I know to pray
For forgiving others is what I ought to do
He wants me to be happy and love others too
1995

Going through a stack of papers, I found my first poem- at first I wondered who wrote it. It was written during my divorce years ago. I had forgotten about it. I changed the beginning because it said "when others make me sad-" a sign of growth-

Though towers of steel may collapse
Our nation of peace remains
With the constitution held in our grasp
The light of freedom still reigns

Let us remember that day
When the world stood by our side
For solidarity let us pray
And fight terrorist found world wide

Let us unite for our families
Our religions and rights to pursue
Reaching for higher standings
Let us see what working together can do

People of 115 countries died that day...

The Want of Vistas Starves the Human Soul

The want of vistas starves the human soul
As adversities cloud our sight
Yet, we can feel complete and even whole
With feet aligned to Heaven's light

Through the colonnades of the heart and mind
There's brightness just within reach
As to God's temple we seek and find
Heaven's windows glorious to teach

In word and deed there to dwell
With His Light's aura our crown
Unto truth our spirit swells
Lifted as pure love surrounds

Marriage is Complete

Marriage is not perfect
But it is complete
A match made in heaven
A commitment sweet

The two twain together
Like a strong rope
A family forever
Our future's hope

Where one is weak
The other is strong
Together helpmeets
Side by side they belong

Of what's in each other
They've appreciation
For work and endeavor
Belief and dedication

May no one divide
This fiber of the home
Their future is wide
Generations known

Still, some walk alone
That other's appreciate
What from heaven has grown
And... rededicate

Those alone must unite
And build up in strength
Lighting talents in sight
Theirs long in length

Thus we all connect
For our life's progression
God's plan is perfect
Each makes an impression

Let there not be envy,
Contention, or strife
But love bright with beauty
And enjoyment of life

Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad

Never Give Up

Never give up
On a single soul
We're all prone to drift
And forget our role

When the time is right
And if humility’s in place
They’ll call on the Lord to lift
For that saving embrace!

Godly Hands are Patient

Godly hands are patient
Possessing power for good
Working hard as Christ's servants
Holding His holy bright priesthood

Testing the Willpower

Testing the willpower of four year olds
A man placed a treat before each
If they waited fifteen minutes, they were told
A second would be placed within reach

Thirty percent were able to wait
For they anticipated having more
The rest, hungry on impulse, just ate
Losing the bigger reward that was in store

The man tracked the children through adulthood
He found a pattern that shocked
Those with patience understood
The path of happiness to walk

Those able to delay gratification
Had healthier relationships and were motivated
They worked harder for their education
As for a higher income they aimed and waited

Patience is a purifying process
That helps us reach for that which we yearn
For it deepens us to possess
The tenacity to work and learn

Patience isn't merely waiting
It is steady and consistent effort
With wants and needs separating
While not being self-absorbed for comfort

As a parent what does this mean?
To indulge children, would this be wise?
With the broader picture now seen
Teach them what gratification denies

What about your mother and father?
Shall He give us everything we ask for?
Struggling builds patience and character
And refines us with faith, trust, and more...

The Captain of the Soul- Invictus/ The Soul's Captain by Elder Orson F. Whitney

Invictus by William E. Henley
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance,
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

The Soul's Captain [The Answer]
by Elder Orson F. Whitney
of the Quorum of the Twelve
Art thou in truth? Then what of him
Who bought thee with his blood?
Who plunged into devouring seas
And snatched thee from the flood?
Who bore for all our fallen race
What none but him could bear.
The God who died that man might live,
And endless glory share?
Of what avail thy vaunted strength,
Apart from his vast might?
Pray that his Light may pierce the gloom,
That thou mayest see aright.
Men are as bubbles on the wave,
As leaves upon the tree.
Thou, captain of thy soul, forsooth
Who gave that place to thee?
Free will is thine — free agency
To wield for right or wrong;
But thou must answer unto him
To whom all souls belong.
Bend to the dust that head "unbowed,"
Small part of Life's great whole!
And see in him, and him alone,
The Captain of thy soul

He's Been There Before

He's Been There Before by Elder Troy Whittle
The alarm bell rings at 6:30, I stumble to my feet
I grab my companions bedding and pull off his sheets
A groan fills the room, is it already time to arise?
It seems like just a second ago I was able to shut my eyes

The morning activities follow- study, prayer and such
When it's time to leave the apartment, you feel you haven't accomplished much
"We have a super day planned," My comp. says with a grin
I lowly utter a faithless breath, "Yeah, if anyone lets us in."

With the word of God and my faithful Schwinn, we ride off in the street prepared to
Face another day of humidity and heat
It's 9:30 in the evening, the day is almost through
My champion and I are riding home not accomplishing what we thought to do

We ride up to the mailbox, hoping to receive a lot
Only to look inside and hear my echo reverberate "air Box"
We go up to our apartment, the day is now complete
The only thing to show for our work is a case of blistery feet

It's past 10:30 p.m. My companion is fast asleep,
Silence engulfs me all about and I begin to weep
In the midst of sadness, I kneel down to pray
I need to talk to father, but I'm not sure what to say

"Oh, Father" I begin, "What happened to us today?
I thought we'd teach somebody, but everyone was away
My hands, my aching hands- worn, hurt and beat;
If our area was any smaller, we'd have knocked every street"

"Why on missions are the days so much alike?
The only difference about today was the flat tire on my bike
Will you send some cooler weather? The heat is killing me
I sweat so bad, it gets in my eyes, it's very hard to see"

"Why do I have to wear a helmet, isn't your protection enough?
People always laugh at me, and call me stupid stuff
Please send us investigators so I may give them what they lack
I want to give them Books of Mormon, the weight of them hurts my back"

"And what about my family: They don't have much to say
I'm sick of not hearing from home day after day after day
Oh Father, Why am I here am I just wasting time?
Sometimes I just want to go home, I'm sorry but that's on my mind"

"My companion, Heavenly Father, what are you giving me?
"The way he rides his bicycle, I don't think he can see
Now you have it, I can't go on, I don't know what to do
That, my Father in Heaven, is the prayer I have for you"

My prayer now finished, I stand up, then jump right into bed
I need my rest for tomorrow, we have another long day ahead
Sleep start to overtake me, I seem to drift away
Then it seems a vision takes me to another time in another day

I'm standing alone on the hill. The view is very nice
A man walks to wards me and says, "My name is Jesus Christ"
Tears of joy well up inside, I fall down to His feet
"Arise," He states, "Follow me to the shade. You and I need to speak"

My attention's towards my Savior, total and complete
He says, "Your mission is similar of what happened to me
I understand how you feel, I know what you're going through
In fact, it would be fair to say I've felt the same as you"

"I even know how you felt when no one listened to you
At times I felt not quite sure what else I could do
I know you don't like to ride a bicycle, for you a car would be sweet
Just remember the donkey I rode wasn't equipped with 21 speeds"

"I understand you don't like sweating, in fact it's something you hate
I remember when I sweat blood from ev’ry pore, oh the agony was great!
I see you don't like your companion- you'd rather have someone else-
I once had a companion named Judas who sold my life for wealth"

"It's hard to wear a helmet and have people make fun of you
I remember when they put thorns on my head and called me King of the Jews
So you feel burdened down by the weight of your pack
I recall how heavy the cross was when they slammed it on my back"

"Your hands hurt from tracting and knocking on doors all day
I guess when they pounded nails into mine, I ached in a similar way
It's hard not to hear from home when your family's not there to see
I lost communication on the cross and cried, "Father, why hast Thou forsaken me?"

"We have a lot in common, but there's a difference between us you see
I endured to the end and finished my mission, so follow and do like me"
He embraced me with His arms and His light filled me with His love
With tears in my eyes I watched as He went back to the Father above

I stood with awe and wonder when a beep rang in my head
I listened and heard the alarm, then realized I was in my bed
My companion let out a groan, "6:30 already, no way!"
I sat up and said, "Come on, I'll even carry your scriptures today!"

No matter what we go through, when we feel we can't take more
Just stop and think about Jesus Christ, He's been there before
