LDS Church in China Faces Worship Restrictions Amid Tightening Religious Controls
In a significant development, the Chinese government has ordered the shutdown of Latter-day Saint congregations in multiple cities across the country, including the capital, Beijing. This marks a notable setback for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as it seeks to maintain legal and peaceful religious practice in China.
On June 22, 2025, the Civil Affairs Bureau of Chaoyang District in Beijing publicly stated that the LDS branches—serving both Chinese nationals and expatriates—had been operating as unregistered social organizations, violating Chinese regulations. These rules require all religious and social groups to register with the state in order to legally gather.
Beijing isn't alone. Similar closures were previously enforced in other provinces, including Nanjing (Jiangsu) and Jilin, reflecting a nationwide campaign to curtail unauthorized religious gatherings—especially those connected to foreign religious organizations.
Latter-day Saints in China, particularly members of the expatriate and Chinese branches, have expressed heartbreak and confusion. While the Church has long committed to respecting Chinese law—operating under careful restrictions and never proselytizing—the tightening environment has made in-person worship nearly impossible in some areas.
In response, the expatriate branch in Beijing has shifted to online Zoom services, starting June 29, as the Church seeks new paths to adapt within the evolving legal landscape.
This disruption also raises questions about the future of the Shanghai Temple, which was announced in 2020 but remains without government approval or visible progress.
As religious policy in China grows increasingly restrictive, the LDS Church continues its delicate balance: honoring local law while supporting its scattered members. Whether through virtual worship or quiet diplomacy, it now faces one of its greatest tests in the world’s most populous country.

I know you can't wrap up into a tidy bow all the reasons people leave the church, but these particular thoughts came to mind.
On a brighter note- because Jesus is the Master healer and this poem cannot be over!

We had a return missionary speak about his mission. I love conversion stories! I love seeing the gospel in action with lives being changed!
The elder spoke of someone who wondrously gave up 5 vices IN A DAY to start his journey with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We all have vices that hold on to us, so it is very encouraging to hear of the gospel completely changing someone! 🙌 ❤️

It's when there's big news that I,
For loved ones, want to share!
I am realizing this as loved ones pass away that I would have loved to call at the "big" moments in life. Heavenly Father should be on the top of tge list.
What news? Iran no longer is a nuclear threat! I wish wonderful changes for this country and its beautiful people. I remember Iranians flooding American colleges back in the day. I hope a bond between our nations forms again.

The Lord is My Shepherd
I am like a lost sheep, fallen and afraid.
While growing more hopeless on a path I have made!
In an habitual rut without any light
I cry out for help and I hear these words in the night:
"I am thy shepherd and you shall not want
Through my goodness and mercy, you can confront
All the dark paths you have taken and the pits you have made
Come follow me to where redemption is paved!"
I partake of green pastures

I woke up thinking about my mom and how this feeling she got from a woman who suddenly avoided her. The only common factor was my then teenage daughter, as this was her friends mother. To be honest, my mom's deepening depression made her tender heart sensitive. She felt anxiety about going to church. She felt anxiety about not going to church. BUt, for the duration that she attended, she had a sweet testimony and many friends. Now I understand her deepening depression was dementia. She withdrew herself from others.
Please. For you, I care.

Jesus, thou, Eternal Life,
I love Thee! Thou revives my heart!
My soul, Thou fills with Light!
In praise, I say, "How great Thou art!"
I have been writing poems since my son left on a mission many years ago. I marvel at the randomness of the internet that these poems have reached so many countries with views now reaching 1.65 million! If there is one thing I would celebrate the most, t is writing Jesus, Son of Man, a Jew. I learned so much and poured my heart into it. It has 2.29K views. I know that there are better poets out there! I am just expressing my thoughts while pondering and as they come. Talking about the earth and wondering about the true scale of the map of the world, I found this video that puts everything into true proportions. It is really cool, especially watching the change of the top half of the northern hemisphere. https://x.com/neilrkaye/status/1050740679008296967
And just to keep me humble and remind me that poetry can bring someone to tears. Elder Whittle's poem, He's Been There Before, has more views than any of mine ever will. It is exactly what every missionary needs to help them get through their mission!

I used to attend The Nevada Interfaith Association (a fellowship dedicated to promoting collaboration, cooperation, and support that encourages sharing among faiths.) Each year, they pick a topic and hold a monthly meeting at a different church site. You get to know different religions and are not treated as an outsider. It is a beautiful opportunity to appreciate differences and to show acceptance.

I often remember when a kind Sikh who, in the middle of the day, was kicked to death at the end of our street by a gang's initiation ritual. I never knew hiim. But afterwards got to know his wife. This poor man practiced medicine in his home country and he was getting ready to take an exam. He was out stretching his legs, getting some fresh air, and holding prayer beads while trying to not feel overwhelmed. 🙏 This was an important message to me to get to know our neighbors and to pray for each other and to lighten each other's load.
