Highest Ground

We are grouping people with suffixes ists and ites

And are defining them into tidy boxes, too 

Then we are labeling them with an ism or even two

For the practices or actions they do

Any labeled box that one opposes

Is only fair game for any insult

And can go as far as inviting murder

For someone extreme enough to do it 

But a nation divided cannot stand

So we must lay contention down

And listen more to understand

Can we meet at the highest ground?

Can we meet at a sound place of love?

Where harmful threats come to no one

Can we offer peace and rise above

All the bad things that we have done?

For we have become distracted 

With bigot blaming and accusing

And our weaknesses have attracted

Those who'd pay for more bruising
