George Washington

Felt the heavy burden fall on him

Continually he prayed

Throughout his service to our nation

We would do well to remember

His prayer recorded on this occasion

May we echo them that they not slumber

We pray to our Almighty God

Who has given us this great land

For our heritage, we've awe

Mindful of Thy favor, Thy hand

We seek to know Thy will

Humbly, we are glad to do it

Bless our land and its people

That we labor honorably

In sound learning families

With manners of civility

Pursing life happily

Save us from violence

Discord, confusion, pride

From arrogance and every evil way

Defend our liberty

Help us to be united as one

We have come from many lands

Many kindreds and tongues

Endue us with wisdom

And self-government

With justice and peace

To Thy commands always

George Washington consulted the Lord continually throughout his service to our nation. We all should echo the words of his prayer: “Almighty God, who has given us this good land for our heritage, we humbly beseech Thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of Thy favor and glad to do Thy will. “Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning and pure manners. “Save us from violence, discord and confusion; from pride and arrogancy, and from every evil way. “Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought out of many kindreds and tongues. “Endue with the spirit of wisdom those whom in Thy name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be peace and justice at home, and that through obedience to Thy law, we may show forth Thy praise among the nations of the earth. “In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in Thee to fail. “All of which we ask through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
