Upon Layers of Rich Bedrock

Upon layers of rich bedrock, I Stand
Formed from generations of high learning
Such that when a storm is at hand
I can face it without even turning

For having been taught all the basics
Each rock represents an inspiration
And I have gained so much through practice
That I have built up a solid foundation

But, I know that the minute I step down
An evil storm can take me away
And as such I'm continually found
Gathering up some new rocks of faith

My biggest two tests are distractions
And fear of unknown moves of opponents
Such that I've been given a plan of action
As well as gifted with a speaking component

And of it, the amazing thing is it whispers
Inside so other things can be tuned out
From all the worldly voices it differs
As it can warm me with love throughout

As I've grown in my desire
To always listen and then do
My pile has gotten much higher
And I'm seeing things all anew

I realize there's more than me in charge
Yet, in my nothingness I swell in belief
And my freed soul expands to enlarge
As my surety of God's love for me melts deep

[Verse 1] Upon layers of rich bedrock, I stand Formed from generations of high learning Such that when a storm is at hand I can face it without even turning For having been taught all the basics Each rock represents an inspiration And I have gained so much through practice That I have built up a solid foundation [Pre-Chorus] But I know the minute I step down An evil storm can take me away So I keep my hands on the ground Gathering new rocks of faith [Chorus] Solid foundation, keep me here Solid foundation, hold me near When the wind comes calling I will not fall apart Solid foundation, love of God Solid foundation, in my heart [Verse 2] My biggest two tests are distractions And fear of unknown moves of opponents Such that I've been given a plan of action As well as gifted with a speaking component And of it, the amazing thing is it whispers Inside so other things can be tuned out From all the worldly voices it differs As it can warm me with love throughout [Pre-Chorus] As I've grown in my desire To always listen and then do My pile has gotten much higher And I'm seeing things all anew [Chorus] Solid foundation, keep me here Solid foundation, hold me near When the wind comes calling I will not fall apart Solid foundation, love of God Solid foundation, in my heart [Bridge] I realize there's more than me in charge Yet, in my nothingness, I swell in belief And my freed soul expands to enlarge As my surety of God's love for me melts deep [Chorus] Solid foundation, keep me here Solid foundation, hold me near When the wind comes calling I will not fall apart Solid foundation, love of God Solid foundation, in my heart

Finding Strength in Challenging Times
Elder Allan F. Packer
Ensign, May 2009, 17

“They will have no fear of bad news;
their hearts are steadfast,
trusting in the Lord.” – Psalm 112:7

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine
and puts them into practice
is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
The rain came down,
the streams rose,
and the winds blew
and beat against that house;
yet it did not fall,
because it had its foundation on the rock.” – Matthew 7:24-25
