I Couldn't Believe What I Heard

I couldn't believe what I heard
Going to church is not for our own sake?
But, the more I studied God's word
A new attitude in me did awake

Our Savior said, "Come Follow Me"
And to deny yourself and take up your cross
Soon, with new thoughts of His sacrifice developing
I decided that losing myself was a small cost

Such that each Sabbath I shake
The hand of somebody new
And with my greeting I make
A note if they need anything too

When I enter a classroom
I volunteer for anything
Such that, although I don't know the tune
You will always hear me singing

Now I feel that I'm active
And growing spiritually
As selflessness is my motive
And I'm happy habitually
