Internet Lore

Internet lore  defined as widely held beliefs based on putative facts liked and shared all over the internet.

That widely held conspiracy theory,
With so many visits, must be true!
Other explanations, are there any?
So vastly liked and shared, who'll argue?

One text links to the next,
The lure of internet lore.
Engrossing and complex,
To stop and think is a chore.

It Takes Two Hands

In the past, I would have gone to BYUTV for Book of Mormon commentary.  Now I see that there are wonderful videos at lds.org  https://www.lds.org/media-library/video/categories/book-of-mormon?lang=eng

On life's journey, it takes two hands
To find and taste the love of God
For such deceptive darkness lands
Satan's flames appear to be gone

In one hand, firmly hold God's Word.
Stand tall and absorb the hot fiery darts.
In the other hand, hold aloft
Faith's quenching shield till Satan departs.

Don't melt low in this fire
Despair or run away in fear.
Hold firm and rise up, higher
Douse it with water pure and clear.

See the heat for what it is
Satan's attack
Have faith, press on, and know this
God has your back

Always hold in balance
God's Word and your faith
Satan won't stand a chance
With God as your strength

In the heat of temptation's power
Pour forth all the faith you have
Heed God's Word, for therein is power
And press on along the path

I am picturing holding to the rod to keep your balance as you rise up, tall, to pour all the faith you have down on the fiery flames that try to overpower. Elder Maxwell has such a mastery of the scriptures and of words in general that I struggled to picture what he said till I understood quenching flames means extinguishing them, (so quenching thirst means putting an end to your thirst), why we would want to absorb the flames (to see them for what they are), and aloft (I thought meant hold away from you. But, it means high like a loft in a home.)

1 Nephi 15:24

They would never perish; neither could the temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower them unto...

Intention

Declare this intention-
"Of myself, I'll share!"
Apply introspection
And vow this in prayer:

"Lord, what wilt thou have me do?
Who can I help in need?
Strengthen me to follow through-
Thy spirit to heed."

Touching each thought and deed
One thought should penetrate-
"Lord, here I am.  Lead!"
As to Him we consecrate.

I was touched by President Benson quoting President Packer.

https://www.lds.org/ensign/1988/12/jesus-christ-gifts-and-expectations?lang=eng
The constant and most recurring question in our minds, touching every thought and deed of our lives, should be, “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?” (Acts 9:6.) The answer to that question comes only through the Light of Christ and the Holy Ghost. Fortunate are those who so live that their being is filled with both.
Christ’s great gift to us was His life and sacrifice. Should that not then be our small gift to Him—our lives and sacrifices, not only now but in the future? A few years ago my colleague Elder Boyd K. Packer said this: “I’m not ashamed to say that … I want to be good. And I’ve found in my life that it has been critically important [to establish this intention] between me and the Lord so that I knew that he knew which way I committed my agency. I went before Him and said, ‘I’m not neutral, and you can do with me what you want. If you need my vote, it’s there. I don’t care what you do with me, and you don’t have to take anything from me because I give it to you—everything, all I own, all I am—,’ and that makes the difference.” (“To Those Who Teach in Troubled Times,” address delivered at seminary and institute conference, Summer 1970, Salt Lake City.)

Always I want to be good
And stand up for Jesus Christ,
To live my life, as He would
With His Spirit as my light.

A Peaceable Follower of Christ

A black-and-white illustration of a glass two-thirds full of water sitting on a table or ledge.
Be a peaceable follower of Christ.
Like oil found resting on water,
Rise from contention. Stay buoyed in light
And love from Heavenly Father!

This thought was based on something Sister Oscarson said about being like oil that rests on water.

Murmuring

Murmuring can be contagious,
And suspiciously outrageous!
Be patient. Wait for the facts.
Keep your faith. Goodness attracts!
I am thinking about Lehi's wife repeating the complaint the the two older son's had that Dad was a visionary man.  She was afraid Lehi had sent them back to Jerusalem to perish.

Goblet for Healing

The bottle of bitterness
Sets your stomach reeling.
The goblet of gratitude
Is purely for healing.

Each is readily nearby
And it's up to you to choose
Only one does satisfy
The other does abuse

Perspective

When you are given a command
Receive it with all your heart
Pray. Inspiration will come and
Each obstacle will depart.
Pondering Nephi's command to go and get the plates. Once he came to know that he was commanded of God, he knew it would happen!

Treasure

Let your most valued treasures be
What comes from Heaven above
Turn to God when you are hurting
And be reminded of love

Pervasiveness

When one thing goes wrong
Don't let it bleed
Into where you're strong
Let good things lead

The Rebel

The aloof rebel set his heart as sand
And drifted with the changing of the wind
He found while shifting it was hard to stand
And swiftly fell on his face in the end

Father's Advice

Not to Hide

With problems ever so real
I come to church each week
And pray that the Lord will heal
And bless me where I am weak

Keep the Commandments

The ten commandments were God-given
We can choose to keep them or set them aside
But if you have your sights on Heaven
With each choice, it is easier to decide!

Wash Your Hands of the Problem

A painting by Arnold Friberg depicting Nephi standing near a stone fireplace with one arm outstretched, rebuking his brothers.

Wash your hands of the problem
Like you would an ablution
Pray that your heart will soften
Believe in a solution

1 Nephi 2:

16 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, being exceedingly young, nevertheless being large in stature, and also having great desires to know of the mysteries of God, wherefore, I did cry unto the Lord; and behold he did visit me, and did soften my heart that I did believe all the words which had been spoken by my father; wherefore, I did not rebel against him like unto my brothers.
17 And I spake unto Sam, making known unto him the things which the Lord had manifested unto me by his Holy Spirit. And it came to pass that he believed in my words.
18 But, behold, Laman and Lemuel would not hearken unto my words; and being grieved because of the hardness of their hearts I cried unto the Lord for them.
19 And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto me, saying: Blessed art thou, Nephi, because of thy faith, for thou hast sought me diligently, with lowliness of heart.

A Visionary Man

A painting by Del Parson showing a group of people mocking and pointing their fingers at Lehi, who is prophesying while standing near a palm tree.
https://www.lds.org/media-library/images/lehi-prophesying-in-jerusalem-39638?lang=eng image source

A visionary man
Gets carried away
To a place where he can
See clearly, The Way

Wherefore it came to pass that my father, Lehi, as he went forth prayed unto the Lord, yea, even with all his heart, in behalf of his people.
And it came to pass as he prayed unto the Lord, there came a pillar of fire and dwelt upon a rock before him; and he saw and heard much; and because of the things which he saw and heard he did quake and tremble exceedingly.
And it came to pass that he returned to his own house at Jerusalem; and he cast himself upon his bed, being overcome with the Spirit and the things which he had seen.
And being thus overcome with the Spirit, he was carried away in a vision, even that he saw the heavens open, and he thought he saw God sitting upon his throne, surrounded with numberless concourses of angels in the attitude of singing and praising their God.
And it came to pass that he saw One descending out of the midst of heaven, and he beheld that his luster was above that of the sun at noon-day.
10 And he also saw twelve others following him, and their brightness did exceed that of the stars in the firmament.
11 And they came down and went forth upon the face of the earth; and the first came and stood before my father, and gave unto him a book, and bade him that he should read.
12 And it came to pass that as he read, he was filled with the Spirit of the Lord.
13 And he read, saying: Wo, wo, unto Jerusalem, for I have seen thine abominations! Yea, and many things did my father read concerning Jerusalem—that it should be destroyed, and the inhabitants thereof; many should perish by the sword, and many should be carried away captive into Babylon.
14 And it came to pass that when my father had read and seen many great and marvelous things, he did exclaim many things unto the Lord; such as: Great and marvelous are thy works, O Lord God Almighty! Thy throne is high in the heavens, and thy power, and goodness, and mercy are over all the inhabitants of the earth; and, because thou art merciful, thou wilt not suffer those who come unto thee that they shall perish!
15 And after this manner was the language of my father in the praising of his God; for his soul did rejoice, and his whole heart was filled, because of the things which he had seen, yea, which the Lord had shown unto him.

The Altar

The purpose of the altar
Is to thank the Lord on high
And, through sacrifice, offer
A faithful effort to try

1 Nephi 2: And it came to pass that he built an altar of stones, and made an offering unto the Lord, and gave thanks unto the Lord our God.

Confound

Pray for Christ's words which confound
And shake those who utter against Him
Who are rebelliously bound?
Pray they might heed what He commands them

1 Nephi 2:14 And it came to pass that my father did speak unto them in the valley of Lemuel, with power, being filled with the Spirit, until their frames did shake before him. And he did confound them, that they durst not utter against him; wherefore, they did as he commanded them.

Cover the Year in Prayer

Let us cover this year in prayer!
Through much dignity comes might!
With what we know to be right, share!
For life's sanctity, let's fight!

Dear Friend,

Thank you for your hard work in 2015. Together, we laid an important foundation upon which we can build this new year – fighting for key issues from dignity for women to the sanctity of human life.

But the Left is still threatening the values we hold d
ear, so there’s no time to rest.

That’s why I ask that you join me in covering this new year in prayer.

Our 2016 Prayer Points provide a good summary of the key issues to pray over … and ask for God’s blessing, wisdom, and favor as we tackle these critical issues.

I know you agree that prayer is such a powerful way to fight for what we know to be right. So thank you for praying. I’m grateful!

Sincerely,

Penny Nance

 Be successful in the defunding of Planned Parenthood and, therefore, save the lives of millions of babies in years to come

 Halt the undermining of religious freedom, which is evaporating before our eyes, threatening you and your family’s right to exercise your faith

 Stop the assault on our First Amendment right to free speech on college campuses

 See America regain its moral footing to support Israel and fight the increasing threat from radical Islamists

The Captain of the Soul- Invictus/ The Soul's Captain by Elder Orson F. Whitney

Invictus by William E. Henley
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance,
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

The Soul's Captain [The Answer]
by Elder Orson F. Whitney
of the Quorum of the Twelve
Art thou in truth? Then what of him
Who bought thee with his blood?
Who plunged into devouring seas
And snatched thee from the flood?
Who bore for all our fallen race
What none but him could bear.
The God who died that man might live,
And endless glory share?
Of what avail thy vaunted strength,
Apart from his vast might?
Pray that his Light may pierce the gloom,
That thou mayest see aright.
Men are as bubbles on the wave,
As leaves upon the tree.
Thou, captain of thy soul, forsooth
Who gave that place to thee?
Free will is thine — free agency
To wield for right or wrong;
But thou must answer unto him
To whom all souls belong.
Bend to the dust that head "unbowed,"
Small part of Life's great whole!
And see in him, and him alone,
The Captain of thy soul

He's Been There Before

He's Been There Before by Elder Troy Whittle
The alarm bell rings at 6:30, I stumble to my feet
I grab my companions bedding and pull off his sheets
A groan fills the room, is it already time to arise?
It seems like just a second ago I was able to shut my eyes

The morning activities follow- study, prayer and such
When it's time to leave the apartment, you feel you haven't accomplished much
"We have a super day planned," My comp. says with a grin
I lowly utter a faithless breath, "Yeah, if anyone lets us in."

With the word of God and my faithful Schwinn, we ride off in the street prepared to
Face another day of humidity and heat
It's 9:30 in the evening, the day is almost through
My champion and I are riding home not accomplishing what we thought to do

We ride up to the mailbox, hoping to receive a lot
Only to look inside and hear my echo reverberate "air Box"
We go up to our apartment, the day is now complete
The only thing to show for our work is a case of blistery feet

It's past 10:30 p.m. My companion is fast asleep,
Silence engulfs me all about and I begin to weep
In the midst of sadness, I kneel down to pray
I need to talk to father, but I'm not sure what to say

"Oh, Father" I begin, "What happened to us today?
I thought we'd teach somebody, but everyone was away
My hands, my aching hands- worn, hurt and beat;
If our area was any smaller, we'd have knocked every street"

"Why on missions are the days so much alike?
The only difference about today was the flat tire on my bike
Will you send some cooler weather? The heat is killing me
I sweat so bad, it gets in my eyes, it's very hard to see"

"Why do I have to wear a helmet, isn't your protection enough?
People always laugh at me, and call me stupid stuff
Please send us investigators so I may give them what they lack
I want to give them Books of Mormon, the weight of them hurts my back"

"And what about my family: They don't have much to say
I'm sick of not hearing from home day after day after day
Oh Father, Why am I here am I just wasting time?
Sometimes I just want to go home, I'm sorry but that's on my mind"

"My companion, Heavenly Father, what are you giving me?
"The way he rides his bicycle, I don't think he can see
Now you have it, I can't go on, I don't know what to do
That, my Father in Heaven, is the prayer I have for you"

My prayer now finished, I stand up, then jump right into bed
I need my rest for tomorrow, we have another long day ahead
Sleep start to overtake me, I seem to drift away
Then it seems a vision takes me to another time in another day

I'm standing alone on the hill. The view is very nice
A man walks to wards me and says, "My name is Jesus Christ"
Tears of joy well up inside, I fall down to His feet
"Arise," He states, "Follow me to the shade. You and I need to speak"

My attention's towards my Savior, total and complete
He says, "Your mission is similar of what happened to me
I understand how you feel, I know what you're going through
In fact, it would be fair to say I've felt the same as you"

"I even know how you felt when no one listened to you
At times I felt not quite sure what else I could do
I know you don't like to ride a bicycle, for you a car would be sweet
Just remember the donkey I rode wasn't equipped with 21 speeds"

"I understand you don't like sweating, in fact it's something you hate
I remember when I sweat blood from ev’ry pore, oh the agony was great!
I see you don't like your companion- you'd rather have someone else-
I once had a companion named Judas who sold my life for wealth"

"It's hard to wear a helmet and have people make fun of you
I remember when they put thorns on my head and called me King of the Jews
So you feel burdened down by the weight of your pack
I recall how heavy the cross was when they slammed it on my back"

"Your hands hurt from tracting and knocking on doors all day
I guess when they pounded nails into mine, I ached in a similar way
It's hard not to hear from home when your family's not there to see
I lost communication on the cross and cried, "Father, why hast Thou forsaken me?"

"We have a lot in common, but there's a difference between us you see
I endured to the end and finished my mission, so follow and do like me"
He embraced me with His arms and His light filled me with His love
With tears in my eyes I watched as He went back to the Father above

I stood with awe and wonder when a beep rang in my head
I listened and heard the alarm, then realized I was in my bed
My companion let out a groan, "6:30 already, no way!"
I sat up and said, "Come on, I'll even carry your scriptures today!"

No matter what we go through, when we feel we can't take more
Just stop and think about Jesus Christ, He's been there before
